82 Jobs Saved at Franklin Boxboard

On Aug. 8, 2006 a fire broke out on Franklin Boxboard’s roof. The Franklin, Ohio, mill makes uncoated recycled boxboard. No one was injured. Franklin Boxboard at the time had about 82 employees. It made boxboard for puzzles, can separators, white-lined coated paper, and picture frame backing paper.
January 14, 2008, a fire at Franklin Boxboard "shut down traffic monday night around 8 pm."
Fast forward to April 15, 2008 a firing of 82 local area workers at Franklin Boxboard has been averted.
The union, represented by the (USW) United Steelworkers of America was able to get its membership to approve a new contract today. The contract eliminates double-time pay on Sunday and time-and-a-half pay on
Saturday, cuts workers pay by 10 percent to 15 percent overall and replaces the
pension plan with a 401k, according to the union.
Management at the Newark Group, (according to its website) keeps close financial and planning control of its business units. Franklin Boxboard will close just like Middletown Paperboard did in 2002, if it is deemed not financially competitive. The union approval vote was the cause of the plant staying open.
United Steelworkers of America (USWA) represents steel workers, the Franklin Boxboard employees and other employees in the United States and Canada.
Franklin Boxboard is located at 50 E 6th St., Franklin, OH, 45005-2765 is owned by The Newark Group, founded in 1912 according to the official company website. The Newark Group is comprised of a network of vertically integrated 100% recycled paperboard operations. Robert H. Mullen is the Chairman of the Board.
In August 2004, Mr. Mullen was named Chief Executive Officer. In July 2005, Mr. Mullen was named Chairman of the Board.
