Sounds like Mr. Sarkar has the answers to avoid bank fees noted in the last two or three paragraphs of this story. The pay day loan thing bothered me on the 391% interest. I voted yes on Issue 5 for that reason alone even though I hate to see more jobs go as the pay day loaners close shop. The 28% interest from some credit cards should be lowered also IMO. Would regulation help? Just asking. As to the subject of these bailouts- why does the government want to give taxpayer money to companies who will retain the same management people that got the company in trouble in the first place? Looks like, before loaning them the bailout money, they would require for example, the auto makers, to fire the entire management group from CEO on down and require the company to lower the wages on the union line workers to a reasonable rate while paying more of their benefits package out of pocket. They'll bit--, but it beats not having a job at all.Doesn't make sense to give the same people more money when they couldn't manage the money they had. Provide new competent people- get bailout money on one time basis- and don't do an "AIG" with the luxury trips TWICE!Why isn't the gov. withdrawing the offer for AIG?

VieVet, Great points on the bailout and I think as time goes past we will continue to see more and more problems with how this whole thing was handled and bum-rushed through the system.

In regards to Banks and their lovely fee scheme I think that they simply have a stronger lobby than did the pay-day loan industry and that has so far saved them. I just got a call from my wife this morning in regards to a credit card we have with US Bank. My wife did not receive, or just missed, her usual e-mail notification of a payment reminder last month and she ended up catching it on the same day the payment was due. So she called and paid an extra $15 to make an over the phone payment that very day. The payment due date was the day she called and we figured the $15 was better than having a late payment on our record. A few days later however we were charged a $35 late fee and when my wife called to ask about it she learned the cut off time was 5:00 p.m. and she did not call and pay until 7:00 p.m. that night. Despite my wife’s attempts to explain that we were fine with paying the extra $15, and we did that just in order to avoid a late payment, they would not wave the late fee. Today she called and told me that because of the late payment US Bank has jacked up our interest rate on that card. She is not sure as to the extent of the hike because their website throws an error when she requests to see that page. But she can tell by the amount of the interest that the increase is pretty hefty. It’s always something. |

The banking system is far more usurious than the payday loan shops. Just check credit card interest rates, THEN factor in the surcharges as described above. Can anyone come up with what would be the ACTUAL interest rate for credit card charges? The banking lobby is very powerful. |

Rough story on being two ours late and getting the shaft.
Sort of makes me even angrier that we were asked, LOL.. "asked" that's funny, to help those greedy crooks out last month with that bogus bail out package. |
