I am not trying to support or bash the schools, I just want to make you aware of what people are seeing online when they are researching Middletown Schools. Keep in mind some of these reviews can be a few years old.
This information is from www.greatschools.org ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Middletown High School: 2 out of 10 Great Schools Rating
Posted August 21, 2013
Middletown is the worst district I have ever seen... The
lack of organization and anything resembling quality is readily
evident. This school is focuses on producing athletes and worker bees
but not Intelligent people. Middie "pride" is a joke. Maybe they're
proud that freemasons run the city which is a surveillance police state.
Pride goes before destruction... choose home or virtual schooling if
you live in this place.

I'm a recent MHS grad, and I can honestly say
that I would never have thought to go anywhere else but Middletown High
School. The amount of pride we have as Middies is unlike any other
school. Putting on my purple and white always made me smile. Being a
student at Middletown High School was a unforgettable experience. I had
so many teachers who really cared about me and got involved in my life. I
feel very prepared coming into college and I know that Middletown has
given me a strong knowledge base. Not to mention the diversity present
at MHS. The real world isn't pearly white, and it is nice to get used to
that while you're growing up. I am blessed to have been a part of the
Middie tradition. Once a Middie, Always a Middie!

I am an alumni of MHS. I graduated 2007. As
a facility, the building is older and in need of updating. As for
collage prep, there was none until i enrolled in Butler Tech. I always
felt like an outsider. Always getting bullyed around with little teacher
involvement. As compared to the teachers of butler tech, Middletowns
teachers are not effective at teaching their subject with few
exceptions. As an aspiring parent, I will not have my children endore
the lack of education that i recived. Since MHS, I was an honor student
at Butler Tech. Became an Eagle Scout. And now in collage i have a
Perfect 4.0. There are much higher quality schools in the district. I
was the hard worker that was held back by the system. There are no
morals in the students.

Like so many people, we, too, moved away from friends
and family in Middletown because of the failure of the schools. We
felt it was irresponsible of us to continue to send our children through
this system. When we arrived at our new home and school district, our
kids were very far behind their new friends and they had to work very
hard with some terrific teachers to get caught up. Please note, these
kids were "honors" and "gifted" kids in Middletown. They are doing fine
now, but they now know how to study. My one child recently said, "Wow.
I could never figure out why you didn't like Middletown schools. Now I
get it. NOW, I go to a REAL school." 'nuff said. I don't know what
the solution is. Perhaps A LOT of discipline might be a good beginning.
Cleaning the place might also help. It smells.

Middletown is the kind of school that will give back
what you put in. I am a recent graduate and feel that Middletown
prepared me for college about a well as any other school in the area
because I was a motivated student while there. Though many of the
students of Middletown are not motivated and they don't do anything but
give MHS a bad reputation.

I am the parent of 2 Middletown graduates. One child
was an honor student that had to work hard to obtain that status. She
attended college and was on the Deans List through most of her college
career. My other child maintained a B average only because he chose not
to work hard enough to obtain A's. The education is there you just
have to want it. Middletown has it's problems but overall is a good
school with great leadership and staff.
Posted January 23, 2008
If your child is an honor student in AP and
honors classes they will receive a very basic education. For the most
part, they won't encounter the majority of the school. The general
education is very sub-standard due to the complete lack of disipline.
It is a very rough crowd and seems to be getting worse every day. I
feel most sorry for the poor kids who aren't in honors classes but are
nice kids - they have very long, tiring days there. Often graduates who
were top of their class at MHS struggle at college - they weren't
properly prepared. Not many parents are involved which is not
surprising. The top students come from the families whose parents are
involved and it always the same faces at all the different events be it
sports, music or academics.

I attend Middletown High School (2004-2008) and in overall quality
I believe a fair/good would be a adaquate rating. The school has it's
flaws such as: Poor leadership, lack of teacher involvement, lack of
parent involvement, and many teachers at this school could simply care a
less whether you pass or fail. I highly dislike going here as
often as I must. I have many friends, adore many teachers, and make
outstanding grades. However, seeing such pupils everyday...many
are...complete and utter failures.
Posted September 29, 2006
Middletown High is a great school but they do not
tolerate any kind of violence what so ever. If your student gets
attacked at school and they defend themselves they are in just as much
trouble as the attacker. I do not think this is right I believe you have
a right to defend yourself when attacked. Other than this Middletown
High School is a great learning environment.

As a parent you must be involved or your child will be left behind in this school district
Posted June 9, 2005
Two days before graduation I found out that my daughter
would not be graduating with her class. She had failed Economics,
which is a required class. Even though I work in the high school, I was
never once contacted by a counselor or a teacher to let me know that
there was a problem. To me this indicates a lack of concern on the part
of the entire staff. If I had known in advance that there was a
problem it couldhave and would have been corrected. Now I must pay for
my daughter to attend summer school. While I do not blame anyone other
than my daughter for not making the grade,I feel this could have been
prevented with a little communication.

like the teachers teachers are nice and they give you a popcorn party and movie and pop
Posted October 5, 2009
Although Amanda's test scores are low, the spirit in this school is wonderful! The kids do try and so does the staff. This year I believe that things WILL change there! ------------------------------------Creekview Elementary School3 out of 10
Posted May 30, 2006
I would like to say that the staff at Creekview
Elementary create an atmosphere of learning for children. There is an
atmosphere of high level skill building that goes on throughout the
building as a whole. My children have gone to Creekview for their entire
elementary school careers and have enjoyed their teachers. They love
going to school everyday. I must say that I hate to see them leave and
go to middle school, but the years ahead of them were prepared with a
foundation at Creekview Elementary School.
------------------------------------------- Mayfield Elementary School4 out of 10
Posted August 12, 2013
This school is ridiculous. The students are not aloud to
talk during lunch if they do & barely get to a level they turn the
lights out. I personally have witnessed this first hand while eating
with my child. The principle has several control issues & is not
open minded when new ideals are suggested (unless its her ideal). She
compares her own children to the students. "My child has never missed
one day of school other than being checked out early one day and she is
now in high school". I'm sorry but last time I checked each child's
health, family and personal issues are different. And just because your
child has never missed one day does not make it the only right way.
There are students who are on the Honor Roll who have missed one or two
days due to a illness or emergency. I would NOT recommend this school to
anyone! Believe me if I could change schools for my children I would
& currently have my house up for sale for this very reason. Miss.
Marsh was kid friendly & by far a better principal. The students
fear Ms. Crook and I yet to hear one good thing about this school.
Posted May 5, 2004
I love Mayfield! It is a wonderful school. They have
a lot of extra activities that my daughter really enjoys! The academic
program mixed with their attendance rates make Mayfield Elem. the number
1 school in the Middletown area! I am proud to send my daughter to
Mayfield!
---------------------------------------------------- Verity Middle School4 out of 10
I like this school because we get to connect with
the teachers and they help us with our personal and school lives. Some
of us like myself and my friends are actually interested in learning and
doing our best in school and the teachers understand and respect that.
But other students are just intersted in making a fool of themselves and
trying to be cool and we have to deal with that and that takes away
from our learning time. That's all Verity is recognized for. The bad
things that happen but we never get recognized for the good things that
we do. I think that's unfair.
---------------------------------------------------- Wildwood Elementary School4 out of 10
Posted January 23, 2012
This school has lets kids come to school with head
lice when they definitely know about it. Plus they have no bully
policies. They told us that they have a no tolerance bullying policy,
but when they are told about the problem, their solution is to just look
the other way. That's their policy. This school is the worst school
that I have ever seen. Some teachers teach the kids what they believe
in, for instance: The teacher caught one of the kids cussing and said
the only people who cuss is trailer trash. What happens to the kid(s)
that were in the room that live in a trailer park? Their self esteem
has gone out the window. Plus the principal is brand new and has no
idea what is going on. She says she'll get right to a problem but will
never follow up. Again, their solution to a problem is to look in the
other direction and forget about it. My kids had a bullying problem and
the principal didn't look into the problem until a month later, but
still did nothing to solve the solution. Overall this school is a poor
excuse for a learning center.

I believe this school has wonderful teachers and they truly care about the students. Great neighborhood.
------------------------------------------------- Stephen Vail Middle School4 out of 10
Posted July 18, 2013
"Vail really inforces the bullying rule" Ha! not true. My
child attended there in 2012 and it was a nightmare! My daughter's
attitude changed, suddenly she would beg not to have to go to school,
she stopped doing her homework, and the bullying is an ever day event! I
went to the office, I spoke with the resource officer and nothing...I
looked at my daughter crying and I told her how sorry i was and that i
didn't know what else to do!! Finally i pulled her out and we did the
home school thing....I miss Verity middle school terribly... it was a
wonderful school that had an amazing staff!
Posted October 18, 2010
A public school experience is what you make it. I
have a student at Vail and can tell you things are not perfect, but I
have to wonder what some parents expect? To have a good student and/or a
good citizen, it must start at home. Have you ever asked yourself what
kind of parent you are? My child knows if he gets into trouble at
school he will get in trouble at home. The people in this city sent
their children to school with no training or instruction and want to
protect them when they break the rules. Welcome to society. Your same
little Johnny or Suzy will spend time in jail, then who will you blame?
It is time for lazy parents to get off their butts, claim their
insubordinate children as a product of their home environment and take
the responsibility to straighten them out!
Posted July 22, 2009
My children go to this fantastic middle school called Stephen
Vail Middle School. It's absolutley magnificent. They learn about the
'real world' there, and not other non-sense. It's a good life lesson for
them. Go bulldog's!
Posted February 2, 2007
The school does offer a variety of academic programs. The
school does offer extracurricular activities as well the after school
programs are limited from what I understand due to the neighborhood that
the school is located in. And there is a very bad lack of parent
involvement. But the staff and principles are AWESOME!
Posted July 8, 2005
We found Vail to be a wonderful school! The teachers
my daughter had were professional, cared about her specific needs, and
went the extra mile to make that very large school feel like a small
close community. I do think that there is work to be done to increase
parental involvement. Many parents have voiced a concern about not
feeling welcome to participate in the school. I encourage you to get
involved and not wait for the welcome mat to be rolled out for you. It
won't be. But if you are ernest in wanting to help improve the quality
of education for your child and all the children, you will jump in and
do your part! Vail has a lot to offer!
Posted November 17, 2004
I do believe that many of the teachers at Vail
have a preconceived idea about their minority students. Many of these
troubled youth have been pushed through the system up to this point and
they figure that it is too late to help them.Vail is run too much like
boot camp than a positive learning environment.
Posted June 30, 2004
I feel that for an inner-city school, Vail does an
excellent job with their students. They have several programs and
teachers that apply to children of all levels of intelligence. The
discipline policies could use work, but with the new laws from the
state, all schools struggle with this. The special education teacher my
child had was excellent. She worked with him and be was able to have an
excellent year and I feel confident him going to the high school next
year and that was my biggest fear.
Posted May 21, 2004
I agree with the previous review. I recently learned that
personnel (principal in particular) is quick to judge and is not
interested in trying to help a trouble student but is very eager to get
them out of the school. A troubled child needs a counselor (some one to
confide in) not a drill sargeant who intentionally tries to provoke the
student behind closed doors. Belittling a student is not the solution.
I hope this school will take the initiative to help their students not
deter them!
Posted March 3, 2004
This school needs alot of work to do. Not setup
for kids with learning and behavior problems, to quick to judge the
problem on hand. Just push them through they'll be ok addatude. Need to
spend time with kids to see what makes them learn better & get their
input on the school.
----------------------------------------------------------- Miller Ridge Elementary School4 out of 10

Miller Ridge elementary, is a great school,my foster children go here and they have improved so much in their reading, math and writing. I highly recommend this school.
Posted August 26, 2011
I could not be happier with Miller Ridge Elementary. We
moved into the district with the intention of sending our children to
private schools. Our plans went a bit awry when my youngest son was
diagnosed with speech and occupational therapy needs, and was not
accepted into the private school of our choice. As a result he and my
oldest son which attended John XXIII (K-2) began attending Miller Ridge.
I believed my older son would be ahead of the other students based on
his attendace at the private school, but results provided on Fall
reading assessments indicated he was behind and tested below average on
the third grade state reading assessment. I am happy to report that on
the test given in the Spring he scored above average in reading and
math. My youngest son receives speech and occupational therapy on an
IEP at Miller Ridge, and the administration is wonderful with him. I
could not be happier with this school, and based on the most up to date
test scores, believe they should be rated higher than a 6 out of 10 on
this web site. The principal of the school is wonderful and welcoming.
If you live in this district think twice about wasting your money on a
private school!
Posted July 14, 2005
This is a great school with a wonderful group of
experienced teachers. My daughter received a great education in the 5
years she was there.(first-fifth) This school has the nickname of being
'little Harvard', so if you send your child there be prepared for lots
of homework and involvement in your child's education! Mrs. Gallagher,
the principal is also a very experienced educator and caring individual.
Mrs. Auvil, the secretary is also wonderful to all the parents and
students. I would highly recommend this school.
Posted December 6, 2004
My daughter has been going to Rosedale for 3 years
and is now in the second grade. The relationship between teachers and
students are wonderful. My daughter had Mrs. Brandenburg and Mrs.
VanArsdale for Kindergarten, then had Mrs. VanArsdale again for 1st
grade. These 2 teachers are wonderful. I couldn't have asked for better
teachers for my daughter. The principal (Mrs. Gallagher) is extremely
involved and very receptive to the needs of our children. They also
have a great secretary (Mrs. Auvil). She is so great with the parents
and students. I cannot forget Mr. Smethers. He is the
janitor/maintenance man at Rosedale. The children love him. He knows
all the kids by name and greets each one with a warm smile daily. My
daughter and I love Rosedale. Thanks for being such an awesome school
with such high regards for a priceless education! Every school district
needs a school like this!
---------------------------------------------------------------------- Rosa Parks Elementary School4 out of 10
Posted August 14, 2013
Rosa Parks School is one of the best schools in
Middletown. They are the only school in the area to receive all
passing grades on the state's new report card. Their test scores have
gone up double digit percentage points consistently over the past 4
years. All this can be verified through the Ohio State Report Card. It
is too bad that an upset individual would like to downplay all of the
staff & students' hard work over a personal issue. Keep up the good
work!!!
Posted August 13, 2013
Rosa Parks Elementary - Worst School in Middletown! It's nasty,
the teachers are NOT properly qualified, half the kids are allowed to
go to school with lice. People have bed bugs and their kids go spread
them around the school and it goes ignored. The bus drivers pick on kids
and ignore parents, the school does NOTHING! Including refusing to view
a cell phone video of a fight involving a bus driver and then denying
its existence. They did tell the parent of the kid with the phone video
"that it is against school policy to record and he/she could be
expelled!! Only the white kids here seem to be the ones "with learning
difficulties and behavioral issues" (according to staff's
assessments)HORRIBLE SCHOOL!!! The principal and superintendent should
be fired and prosecuted! Wildewood is MUCH better. Or move to Liberty
Twp and get into Lakota!!!!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- Central Academy Nongraded Elementary School4 out of 10
Posted October 28, 2012
All good things, it seems, must come to an end.
And so it has been with Central Academy. The school was truly a unique
learning experience before the last year or two, but it is rapidly
morphing itself into an institution that "picks the winners" by
blanketing all students with the same instruction and same homework,
with an eye towards pushing out students who don't fit the narrative the
school is aiming to create. The school is more about burnishing a story
it created around itself than it is about trying to encourage
individual thinking, which it once did spectacularly. Every year, you'll
hear about people camping out overnight to get their children a slot in
the middle school. As a disapppointed parent who has seen the decline, I
would advise those parents to look into other alternatives. It is my
intent to withdraw my children from the school as they approach middle
school age. It's sti;ll a pretty good place up to that level, but once
there, it's all about shiny happy faces for the cameras.
Posted July 8, 2010
Back in the day, this school was 'the' school. Now,
not so much. Dr. Suiter couldn't lead her way out of a wet paper bag.
They have combined grades k and 1st, 2nd and 3rd, etc. So basically
every other year your child is repeating a grade. There is no such
thing as competition in this school. There is no parent involvement.
They can't even get volunteers for the PTO. No one will help with
anything. Also, be warned they only cater to underpriveledged kids, if
you're not on assistance, drive your kid somewhere else. Unfortunately,
I have sent my child here for two years, BUT we will be leaving. As
far as education in this town goes....you get what you pay for. This is
one BROKE school. They do nothing extra. Art class is drawing on
cheap paper that is it! If your looking for the best...this is not it.
Posted September 15, 2009
The mannerism of the teaching methods, for the faculty, staff, students and curriculum, of this school rate 5 stars all the way; which is a brag from a grandmother of a student that attends there.
Posted November 3, 2008
This school is wonderful! I cannot rave about the teachers
hard work and dedication to their students success enough. Every
surrounding school district needs to learn a lesson about learning and
teaching from Central!
Posted August 12, 2008
I have 3 children that attended and attend here! They are verry pleased! I am also pleased by their performance!
Posted February 25, 2008
Central is a great school. I am very pleased with the untraditional approach taught here.
Posted June 15, 2007
I've had 3 children attend this school. My oldest child
was in the first kindergarten class when this school opened in 1991 and
stayed through the sixth grade. My youngest child is now attending.
Over the years I have experienced both good and bad. Initially, the
school and staff were welcoming, open, and friendly. The structure of
class grouping is wonderful for the development of confidence and
reinforcement of learning. What has occurred over the years that
troubles me is that so much of everything is now focused on standardized
testing and not on the needs of the individual child. Many of the
things my older children enjoyed have now been eliminated. (Sixth grade
Luau, all students recognized at the year end ceremony with Kindergarten
'graduation') Maybe its that way everywhere now but up until the last
two years, I had never considered sending my children to their 'home'
school.
Posted February 27, 2007
Central is a wonderful alternative to traditional perocial and private
schools. This is our second year here(following two years at a local
private)and my son has done nothing but flourish. The quarterly reports a
far more thourough than a traditional report card. This school is
desighned for parent involvement.that being said, you must follow the
reading requirement, reinforce the units being taught, and ask questions
about the progress reports.(ie 'Why did you get a 2 today? and 'What
needs to change so you bring home a 1?') My only wish for this school
would be to add foreighn language. However Middletown city school
district needs to make this manditory curriculm.
Posted February 23, 2007
My child dose not like this school, (central academy) and
neither do I! This school has kids see the 20 children everyday,
because from 8:00 AM-10:40 AM they see themselves. The for 15 min,
thats all they see 20 other students. Then for the rest of the day they
see the same kids they have seen all year long. Then when Winter comes,
the children do not have recess so they dont get to see that other set
of 20 kids that they usually do. So all day they are cooped up in one
classroom, with the same kids of 2 different grades. 1st&2nd,
3rd&4th, and 5th&6th and since they dont have grades I really
dont know what my childs really capable of. He gets 1's, 2's, or 3's!
WOW! That really tells me something!
Posted December 28, 2005
This is the third school our daughter attended and we
are very pleased. The saying 'The third time's the charm' really works
here. They have a zero percent tolerance for bullying, which I like
since my daughter has special needs, and the teachers are very concerned
about her progress. Her teacher answers my emails quickly. The entire
staff is wonderful. I highly recommend this school for anyone thinking
of transfering their child or moving to the city.
Posted July 31, 2005
Both of my children attend this school. They have patience,
which children need. The overall goal for these children is to be
independent workers...self starters. Their leadership is unlike any of
our other public schools. Kids don't just 'get by', they truly learn.
My youngest son flourished, my oldest son has confidence, and I'd
recommend this school to ANYONE K-6. Your child will get personal
attention on things they struggle with and a gentle push on what they
are really good at. Check out their state report card. My oldest son
has scored avg to above avg on the state proficiencies. Central's staff
is magnificent!I love this school! They also keep parents in the loop
about EVERYTHING and demand parent involvement. Which makes me
appreciate them even more. That seems to get lost in schools the older
the children get. I give them 5+ stars!!!
Posted November 17, 2004
Excellent School. My child is in the third grade and has
attended 5 schools. Central is the best one yet.Great parent-teacher
relationships.Warm, open, loving student-teacher relationships. DR
Sueter is a great leader. The entire staff is great! For once, I don't
worry about my kids safety while they are in school.Keep up the good
work Central. Don't ever change.

My kid is in third grade. She loves the school.
I like the way teachers have teamed together to teach kids, ensure
discipline by rewarding those who behave and learn very well and
discourage those with behavior. Keep it Ms Smith!

I love Madison Highschool. The school and the kids are
great. I just wish before school the teachers could get out a list of
what highschool students need ahead of time. I dont know what to get my
son and school starts in 4 days.

As a Realtor and past County School Board president I
am confident you will find Madison Local Schools above average through
out. My two children graduated from this school and from my perspective
there is a high level of parental involvement, both scholastic and sports
related. They offer options for slower and advanced students as well
as handicaped. The best way to get a feel is to tour the school and talk
to the administrators.
Posted May 3, 2005
I believe Madison Township is very fortunate to have such
a wonderful school. Our acheivement scores are some of the highest in
the county, while our per pupil spending is one of the lowest. Our
special education department is one of the best anywhere. We have a
caring and supportive community that really gets involved in the
children's activities. It shows in the involvement of the students as
well. You will find a large number of the athletes that participate in
drama and music programs as well. The kids here really support each
other.

The school has some excellent teachers and some extremely poor
teachers and faculty, seems as if all faculty fall into one category or
another. The education overall is great and most of the faculty are
eager to help and communicate well with parents. The principle
leadership seems to care however many issues are left unresolved which I
feel compromise the safety of our students.
Posted August 15, 2005
I think Madison is a great school. Of course I
also think that there is a lot of room for improvment. I think some of
the teacher need to take more time with the parents instead of rushing
them off. I am very interested in how my child it doing and I want to
sit and talk about it. Instead there has been a couple of times I was
basiclly shoved out the door. I think they need to be more aware of
this. Besides that I wouldn't want my child to go to any other school.
Posted February 13, 2004
I love the school my child loves it but I think the administrator needs a reality check and remember that its the best interest of the children that comes first!

Very good school. Small classes. Alot of one on one with kids.

ktf, I was not aware of this site, but am not surprised. It's kind of a mixed bag, with the people who are the happiest or the angriest taking the time to post a review. Not exactly a scientific sample.

I am aware it is not a scientific sample, but you can be easily influenced by these types of reviews. If you use Zillow.com to look up houses for sale, at the bottom it lists the scores for the area's schools. And if you are moving to the Cincinnati and Dayton area from out of state and you see the schools scores listed below. Obviously you would influenced by which city to move to based on these scores. If the city and the Schools really wants to change it's image they need step up to start answering these posts on these websites, just like business do with reviews on Yelp.com. That way the readers know that the school and city are aware the of the issues at hand.
I know many of us on MUSA don't see eye to eye with Marcia, but I do respect her for stepping up and answering the questions on this site. Especially when we hear nothing from the other people on the school board and city council. |
