Cornerback Quinn's future up in the air

The Illinois football coaching transition may have already caused its first decommitment, depending on your view of what is the ever-changing recruiting world.

Cody Quinn, a senior cornerback from Middletown, Ohio, originally gave his verbal pledge to former coach Ron Zook in June. But he visited West Virginia two weekends ago, and to hear his coach talk is to wonder if Quinn will ever end up in an Illini uniform.

“He hasn’t told me he’s going anywhere different, but he’s not told me he’s going there though,” Middletown coach Troy Everhart said when asked what the status of Quinn’s commitment to Illinois is.

At the least, Quinn is keeping his options open. The reason for that stems from a lack of communication, from the sounds of it. Everhart said between the time Zook was fired on Nov. 27 and new coach Tim Beckman was hired on Dec. 9, no one associated with Illinois contacted himself or, to his knowledge, Quinn. Neither of the two was sure if Quinn’s scholarship offer would still be honored by a new coach, leaving him in limbo.

“Things were kind of left up to interpretation,” Everhart said.

Unsure of Illinois’ future, Quinn knew he had to look out for his own future. So he’s still weighing his options, telling Rivals.com after his West Virginia visit that he wants to visit Illinois, Indiana, Marshall and Georgia Tech, a sign that there’s likely a lot to play out in his recruitment. Quinn hasn’t been to Champaign this fall, though it was recently indicated to him that Illinois wants to get him on campus.

Even so, no date has been set, and Everhart said that he “can’t honestly answer” what Quinn’s future may hold.

“They were very unclear with what was going on. It’s very sporadic right now,” Everhart said.

Helping Illinois may be the fact that Quinn was recruited and offered by the staff at Toledo when Beckman was there. Everhart said Beckman didn’t have a lot of contact with Quinn; there were multiple Rockets assistants who called or stopped by the school though, so depending on whom Beckman brings to Illinois from his former staff, it could affect Quinn’s decision.
