Today's Journal....
Branch campuses still offer remedial courses Change in state policy won’t affect Miami’s regional campuses “We had people come to us with concerns,” said Michael Pratt, dean of Miami University’s regional campuses, including those in Hamilton and Middletown. “Our answer is you still will be able to (take remedial courses) on the regional campuses Providing remedial education, especially in math and writing, is essential for the branch campuses because of the demographics of the students who go there, Pratt said PERHAPS MICHAEL......BUT HOW ABOUT SOMETHING MORE LIKE....... THERE ARE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES OF SOME HIGH SCHOOLS (INCLUDING MIDDLETOWN) THAT ENTER THEIR FRESHMAN YEAR OF COLLEGE TOTALLY UNPREPARED TO TACKLE FRESHMAN COLLEGE COURSES, ESPECIALLY IN MATH, WRITING, AND SCIENCE. THERE WAS AN ARTICLE SOME TIME AGO WHERE COLLEGES WERE STARTING REMEDIAL COURSES TO TEACH INCOMING STUDENTS WHAT THEY SHOULD HAVE LEARNED IN HIGH SCHOOL, INDICATING THE HIGH SCHOOLS WERE NOT IN TOUCH WITH THE PREPARATION IN THE JUMP TO COLLEGE CURRICULUM. ONE OF THE BIGGEST OBSTACLES IN THE FRESHMAN YEAR IS PASSING FRESHMAN ENGLISH. DON'T KNOW THE REQUIREMENTS NOW, BUT BACK WHEN MIAMI-U MIDDLETOWN FIRST STARTED, YOU COULD ACE ALL YOUR COURSES, BUT IF YOU DIDN'T PASS FRESHMAN ENGLISH, YOU DIDN'T MOVE ON. |
