    I do not play golf nor have I ever designed a golf course but I must say I was shocked to hear at last nights meeting that Weatherwax was buying water. Who on earth would design and build a 36 hole golf course without a main water source?
    If City Hall is going to keep Weatherwax I would think that this problem needs to be solved ASAP.
    Isn’t the conditions of the greens a major marketing point of a golf course?

Resolution No. R2013-04, a resolution authorizing a contract with Elizabeth Ligon for the purchase of certain real property located at 42 North Main Street. (1st Reading)

    Ms Judy stated last year that they were going to need a bond for 1.5 to 2 million dollars this year to demo several of the old buildings in the downtown area. One of the buildings on this list was the old Montgomery Ward located next to this property which was to be used for an extra parking area for Cincy State. So now we are going to spend another $20,000 from the Downtown Fund to purchase this property also to make an even bigger parking lot. Yes sir...huge paved parking areas are really attractive areas to look at.   
    Just how much parking area does City Hall think CS will need in the next five years?
    If CS will need this much parking then we need to consider a parking garage. Oh that’s right we torn that structure down several years ago.

I'll have to watch the replay of this meeting.  I could swear that I first heard Ms. Hamet say that the Ligon property was needed for a "Park 'n' Ride".  Then she said it was for Cincinnati State!!!

So, are the students and staff going to park there...and then get bussed a whole city block to the next corner??? LOL LOL LOL

I think I missed something here. Why do we need a Park and Ride? Ride to where? If we need parking for this ,why don't you use the HUGE parking area over by the bus terminal? How many cars are you going to Park and Ride?

It is sad to see the city leaders struggle to develop a game plan for downtown. Buy this building, tear it down, leave a green space for parking or "future development". Buy buildings in package form on speculation that someone, someday will buy them, knowing most need more rehab cost than what they will ultimately be worth. Establishing a park and ride even though there is no indication that there is enough clientele to use it. Hoping against hope someone will buy the Manchester for an over-inflated cost based on the auditors appraisal, and then sinking 8 to 20 mil in it to attract customers. (Who, among you business people would take this offer, even if you have the money?) Tearing down the old parking garage due to neglect and non-use.....would it surprise any of you if they started discussion on building another garage close to CS (same location as the old one?) And on and on it goes. They don't have a game plan for downtown development. They have a dart board in the city planners office and throw a dart or two at areas labeled "Buy property", "Develop another green space", or "what's next for the S. Main St. folks". Hardly professional, but then, we can't expect professionalism from these people given their history of success, can we.

Note to city leaders......get out of the development business and leave any potential development to the professionals and the market.....in ALL areas of the city. Concentrate on gaining jobs and maintaining what we have in good order. Stop trying to develop the downtown. Not the right time for this. That comes when the rest of the city has been brought up to par and we are again a city people want to live in. THEN, work on the amenities and your little downtown area.
I'm so proud of my hometown and what it has become. Recall 'em all. Let's start over.

These charlatans most likely have something more absurd in mind.
 
Perhaps the plan is to "Park" there and then "Ride" a new horse-drawn trolley down Main Street to see the fantastic "new" old lamp lights.
 
Of course these big thinkers will wait until after the new pavement is down, so that they can tear it right up to install the tracks for the trolley. 
 
This would be no worse use of public funds than some of the other wastes that they've thought up, and at least it would create a couple new jobs.  They would be government, union jobs but jobs, indeed.  (And isn't it obvious that there are several horses' front ends standing idle somewhere in town?)

Downtown stakeholders see the need for more parking

If you build it, they will come. Maybe.

That’s how some downtown advocates and business owners are viewing the city’s possible purchase of land along North Main Street for parking space.

City Council is considering buying property at 42 N. Main St. for $20,000 and potentially leasing a lot next to it owned by Wausau Paper. Those lots would be converted into downtown parking and include a park-and-ride location.

Nancy Griffith, owner of Mockingbirds, a cafe inside the Pendleton Art Center at Central Avenue and Broad Street, said she knows more parking might be needed in the future if downtown continues to develop, but she’s a bit hesitant about the need right now.

“I’m all about stuff not being empty,” Griffith said. “I’d like to say, yes, that we’re busy enough to utilize it (additional parking), but at this point, I’m not certain. It could in theory bring people that wouldn’t normally be headed this way.”

Denise Hamet, the city’s economic development director, said the marketing and the potential sale of the Manchester Inn and growth of Cincinnati State Middletown and other downtown businesses and facilities “are already creating more demand for parking.

“We think this only will increase in the future, so we’re really only trying to plan ahead,” she said.

Hamet said the lot’s owner Elizabeth Ligon was closing the car wash business there and the city saw an opportunity to purchase the land and avoid another vacant structure downtown.

“It’s less opportunity for crime, it’s an opportunity to improve the community’s image, and also at the same time Wausau Paper approached us about parking,” she said.

The largest single parking area for downtown is north of Central Avenue behind the buildings that stretch from Cincinnati State Middletown to the TV Middletown building. That lot is typically half to three-fourths filled, primarily with Cincinnati State Middletown students, but there’s often available street parking along Central or nearby side streets.

Even though downtown parking is not an issue now, Jay and Linda Moorman, owners of BeauVerre at the Square, see the need.

“We’ll be excited when we have a parking problem downtown,” said Linda Moorman.

Hamet said while the city would like to expand parking, the park-and-ride concept is not concrete. She said the Butler Regional Transit System, which will manage the Middletown Transit System later this year, is looking to acquire a grant to pay for 80 percent of the cost to create the park and ride and demolish the existing building on the property. At this point, she said it’s uncertain how many spots could be created.

“We thought this was a really good opportunity to leverage city resources,” Hamet said.

City staff had been discussing potentially demolishing some city-owned buildings for additional downtown parking, but Doug Adkins, Middletown Community Revitalization director, said other than a few long-term ideas, nothing has been discussed, planned or budgeted at this time.

Deborah Rumford, co-owner of Rumford Productions and The Music Club downtown, said there is quite a bit of downtown parking, but agrees with Hamet that it’s likely not enough to satisfy the growth that’s expected downtown.

“This lot back here is full every day,” said Rumford, who’s business is next to Cincinnati State Middletown. “They’re only going to continue to grow. And if they put an RTA stop, it’s greater transportation options for the students.”

And with a park and ride, Rumford said people’s perceptions of a struggling downtown may be changed.

“There are a lot of people who are hesitant to come downtown because they don’t know what’s here,” she said. “If they saw the growth, that would get more people excited. Maybe they’ll come down an hour early (before class or going to work) and catch lunch or shop.”

City Hall needs to call it a "Park n Ride" so they can get more FREE government money for THEIR DOWNTOWN

YEAH, THAT'S THE ANSWER TO THE PERCEPTION OF THE STRUGGLING DOWNTOWN. A PARK AND RIDE. SURE.

WOULD ANY OF YOU PUT TOGETHER A PROJECT LIKE THIS?

Dear Deborah,

Very few good things have come from the RTA, expect moving some criminals from Dayton to the other parts of the area. All you got to do is talk to the area business around the Dayton Mall to find this out. When I use to work at Circuit City, we would routinly have people get off the bus, steal from us, and get back on the bus and go home. That is why the City of Springboro keeps fighting to keep the RTA out of it's city. Let;s hope a connection to the RTA does not happen

On the issue of parking, it's like deja vu with most things downtown -- "CART, MEET HORSE".  Before worrying about parking I would think the business owners have about 10 other issues on their plate that are more important.  Like...um...customers!

This is beyond me!!!  Park & Rides by definition are NOT meant to be built at destinations!!!

Are these people crazy...or just stupid???  Park & Rides are meant to be built at less congested areas (for example in the suburbs or at cities' edges where parking space is NOT at a premium) so that cars can be parked and mass transit can be taken into congested areas where parking IS at a premium!!! 

Now these people are saying that they want more parking space so they are putting in a Park & Ride?!?!?  What are they gonna do let the inner city people park there and then bus them to Towne Mall when it gets redeveloped???

If they think parking is at a premium, they should put a Park & Ride out near I-75, or in Franklin or Monroe and bus them IN to downtown Middletown, not have them park in downtown Middletown to bus them OUT!!!

SHEESH!!!  Don't they teach them anything at Harvard???

I am truly sorry and did not intend to cast any aspersions upon the oldest institute of higher education in the United States.
 
I hope that everyone understands that while Harvard, any other Ivy League school, and virtually all other public and private institutions of higher education in America are capable of teaching a multitude of things, none of them...not even Fenwick High School...can teach common sense!!!

The above estimated totals are based on the number of mowing times shown; however, city staff determines actual mowing frequency and will increase or decrease the mowing as weather conditions dictate.  Usually the annual mowing costs fall within this range.

 

General Fund covers approximately 43%, Auto & Gas Tax covers 47%, Storm Fund covers 6% and Water Fund covers 4% of the mowing budget.

Why is money being removed from the Storm Fund and the Water Fund to pay for mowing?

Why do we have all these separate Restricted Funds if the money can be used for whatever City Hall wants or needs.

Once again this is a perfect example of why we have no money left in the fund for the separation of our sewer system.

THIS CAN'T BE RIGHT. A MILLION BUCKS FOR THREE YEARS TO MOW GRASS (PARKS, WEATHERWAX, (OR DO THEY HAVE THEIR OWN LAWN PEOPLE?) AND MEDIANS???), MAYBE MULCH SOME BEDS/REPLACE BUSHES PERHAPS?????WHAT DID "WE THE PEOPLE" GET FOR THIS AMOUNT OF MONEY SPENT? 350 GRAND A YEAR???? HOW MANY OF YOU (ME INCLUDED) THINK WE ARE IN THE WRONG BUSINESS?

IS THIS IN THE REALM OF BEING CORRECT? THINK THERE'S ENOUGH RETIREES/YOUNG PEOPLE WITH RIDING MOWERS THAT COULD DO THIS FOR A SUMMER AND EARN SOME EXTRA CASH AT FAR LESS ON THE WAGES?
I'm so proud of my hometown and what it has become. Recall 'em all. Let's start over.

City Council OKs street, lighting projects

Residents in the city’s Historic South Main Street District said the installation of decorative street lights this year will make their neighborhood safer.

City council supported 5-0 both a repaving project and the lighting project

DISAPPOINTING MR. LAUBACH AND MS. SCOTT-JONES. THOUGHT YOU WERE CHAMPIONS FOR THE MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE AND NOT INCLINED TO CATER TO THE SMALL CONTINGENT OF INNER CIRCLE CLIENTELE. YOU DO REALIZE YOU WILL BE JOINING US IN HELPING PAY FOR THESE PRIVILEDGED PEOPLE, DON'T YOU? THE REST OF THE CITY IS NOT TREATED WITH THE SAME "ENTHUSIASM" AS THE S. MAIN ST. CLAN. YOU KNOW BETTER THAN TO SUPPORT THIS IDEA. YOU CAVED AGAIN. YOU JUST HELPED THE VERY PEOPLE WHO COULD HAVE AFFORDED THE WHOLE COST AND CREATED A HARDSHIP FOR THE PEOPLE WHO COULD NOT. WHAT IS YOUR REASONING FOR SANCTIONING PEOPLE WHO THINK THEY ARE WORTHY OF SPECIAL TREATMENT?
