Stimulus Funding Received to date: $4,375,000 GREAT NEWS for our community! Thanks to our Engineering Staff and our Transit Staff, Dave Duritsch and Steve Murphy for pursuing the stimulus funds. We have many millions of dollars of projects in requests pending with various agencies. To date we have received funding for the following projects, (funded with federal dollars with no local match required): Street Resurfacing: Sutphin from Central to Grand - $750,000 University from Reinartz to Breiel - $2,250,000 Transit: LTV Vehicles - $150,000 Preventative Maintenance - $275,000 Bus Lift/Hoist - $52,000 Bus Wash Facility - $360,000 Transit Garage Rehabilitation – $170,000 Transfer Station Rehabilitation - $20,000 Vehicle Rehab/Maintenance - $230,000 ADA Para-transit Service - $118,000 Street Resurfacing Projects Abound The stimulus funds for street resurfacing are in addition to the projects already slated for 2009 – N. Breiel resurfacing and the $150M I-75, SR 122 widening project (our portion $6M).
Pothole Season We will again be hiring a contractor to assist with street repairs as soon as the weather breaks. To report potholes: www.cityofmiddletown.org or call 727-3691 (Option 2)
Swimming Pool Operating and Maintenance Funds Needed A reminder that we have the operating funds for the pool through 2009, but do not have maintenance funds for 2009. I believe that we spent about $15,000 in 2008 for maintenance activities. If we are going to keep the pool open beyond 2009, we will need a major push and funding source for both operations and maintenance.
Code Enforcement Property Maintenance We are sending out well over 1,000 letters to property owners – both residential and businesses – asking for their help in maintaining their property. In some cases, the city may have some funds to assist owners. Staff is also working with local businesses that provide supplies for home repair for reduced costs on paint and other maintenance items for city residents and businesses. This program will be rolled out over the next month.
AK Blast Furnace Repair AK will be performing blasts to clean the blast furnace. They are taking advantage of the down time to do the necessary maintenance and repairs to the structure. This will occur the last week of March. AK staff is working with our police and fire staff to firm up the project and notify the public surrounding the site. New Fire Recruits MFD welcomes four new Firefighters David Shaw, Brendan Harnish, Zach Bernard and Landen Richey. Last week they worked a 40 hour schedule to accomplish a Rookie Class/Orientation. They will begin responding to emergency calls this week. Their hiring brings the department to full authorized strength…infusing new energy and allowing the department to operate in the most cost effective manner. Volunteer Victim Advocates Needed Victim Advocates are needed for the Middletown Municipal Court. Eighteen hours of training and a background check are required. An informational session will be held on Tuesday, March 24th at 6:30 p.m. in the Police Training room, Lower Level, City Building. Enter through the Police Department. Applications will be available. You can also indicate your interest by calling the Advocate Office at 425-7825.
