Middletown Resident Honored for Volunteering

Middletown Resident Honored for VolunteeringBy: Tara Kunkle

Ken Cohen is a very popular volunteer. On March 25th Cohen was honored as the Middletown Area United Way’s Volunteer of the Year during the awards meeting. Cohen is also the president of Cohen Brothers Inc. which is a Middletown scrap business.

Cohen volunteers for numerous religious, human service and civic groups, these include the United Way of Greater Cincinnati, which is where he served as chairman of its 2006 campaign. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Butler County, Chamber of Commerce, Middletown Jaycees, Rockdale Temple and Temple Beth Shalom. After he had received his award Cohen discussed his achievements with his family.

In an interview with Rick McCrab from the Middletown Journal Cohen said that the award was a great honor very much appreciated. “No award was needed.” He said it is more about giving back to the community. When Cohen graduated from Middletown High School in 1966 he joined his family business in 1970. His family always said you should give more than you receive.

Cohen learned many lessons from his grandfather Mose Cohen and his father Wilbur. His father Wilbur served on the Middleton Regional Hospital board of directors for more than 40 years. Community service has always been a part of the Cohen family DNA.

There is no doubt the Mr. Cohen has served Middletown well... However, his companys blind purchase of copper and other materials etc. stripped from abondoned housing is more than troubling. To think there was no concern from his company as to where the material they were buying was coming from is hard to beleave. To turn a blind eye to such a practice when it was obvious to anyone that when some guy shows up with a Dillmans shopping cart full of copper piping did't just find it.

I recently made a comment about the Ken Cohen story. It was respectful and critical at the same time of some of his business practices. Is only "purely" good news permitted on you site?
