MIDDLETOWN COMMUNITY FOUNDATION GRANT TO AID POLICE TRAINING

A $24,500 grant from Middletown Community Foundation will be used throughout 2008 and 2009 to cover the costs of training Middletown Police personnel in the latest investigation and management techniques.

Twenty-three Middletown Police Officers will attend 3-5 day seminars at Northwestern University, Reid and Associates in Columbus and Indianapolis, International Police Training in Jacksonville, Florida and State Police Training in Columbus, Ohio—some of the top law enforcement, advanced training facilities in the country.

The list of individual classes show the changes in law enforcement needs caused by the changes in technology and lifestyles of 21st century society.

1.       Street Gang Specialist – Gang Prevention Specialists

2.       Criminal Investigation Techniques – For the New Investigator

3.       Internet Crimes Investigations

4.       Street Gang Investigations/Drug Interdiction

5.       Homicide and Death Investigation/Cold Case

6.       Advanced Death Investigation

7.       Advanced Interview and Interrogation

8.       Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Instructor

9.       Instructor Development Course – Train the Trainer

10.   Deviant Sexual Behavior and Crimes against Children

11.   Managing Police Training/Supervisory

12.   Financial Crime Investigation

13.   Ethics Development Instructor

14.   Emergency Telecommunications Supervisor Training

Police Chief Greg Schwarber said, “Because of a very tight budget, we’ve not been able to send our people to the special police training schools in the past few years. This grant is very much appreciated and will be used to send our people for much-needed training so they can be up to date on the latest trends and methods. Ultimately, our citizens are the ones who benefit. With better training, we can do our jobs better and have a safer Middletown.”

My wife and I added a comment here on the website recently in regards to the behavior of Middletown's female officers, off duty. I still feel that additional training should be in place, just for ethics and character becoming of an officer. Especially one representing the people of Middletown.

In response to this complaint about the Police Department, it really should go directly to the Chief. I know Greg, and I'm sure he would sit down and speak to any Middletown resident that had an issue with one of his staff. It's tough in today's job market to find a good, solid, police officer, with high morals and character. Female officers in particular, as they are held at a higher standard than everyone else. If they don't "meet" those standards, then it should be brought to the attention of those in charge of them. A woman wearing a badge certainly does not give them or any other male/female officer a reason to be degrading, or disrespectful to others.
