Last Chance to Take GED Test Free
August  18, 2009
Contact: Rose Marie Stiehl, Principal Adult Education, Middletown City Schools, 513-420-4520

LAST CHANCE TO EARN GED FREE
Any adult who has not yet earned a high school diploma or the GED equivalent has until August 31, 2009 to take advantage of fee waiver options which allow them to take the GED test free.

Until the deadline, anyone can take a practice GED test and, if passed, are entitled to a $65 fee waiver which allow them to take the entire GED test FREE.
Due to a budget reduction, HB119, at the Ohio State level, there will be no more fee waivers available beginning September 1.

To help local people beat the deadline, the Official Practice Test (OFT) will be administered the week of  August 24 fifteen times in Middletown and surrounding areas.

In reaction to the news received late Friday afternoon, Rose Marie Stiehl, Middletown City School District Adult Education Principal commented, “ This will impact hundreds of area adults who are now caught in a catch 22 situation, especially those who are unemployed. Without a diploma, it will be almost impossible to obtain a job. Without a fee-waiver, it will be difficult to pay for the test.”

Last year in the Middletown program, 536 adults earned a GED, an Ohio High School Equivalency Diploma. According to Stiehl, “Many applicants who passed the test entered college, training programs, or obtained employment.  They had a second chance, a direct result of the GED.”

Middletown Adult Education Program received its fourth Exemplary rating in May, 2009. According to Stiehl, “ We have a history of adapting to serve the community.  We are planning a scholarship program where businesses, organizations, or individual members of the community can sponsor GED applicants. We won’t give up on giving people a second chance. We’ve seen too many lives change because of it.”
Since the usual GED class locations are being used as testing sites August 24 to 31, the start of regular GED preparation classes have been delayed a week to accommodate the expected number of adults who want to be tested on or before August 31, the fee- waiver deadline.

Classes will still be offered free to adults interested in passing the test and will begin the week of August 31 at the same locations listed below as OFT sites. Only the testing fees have changed.

For more information concerning the OPT or preparation classes, call 420-4520 or e-mail rmstiehl@middletowncityschools.com
