Kokosing Construction Company Wins Build Ohio Award
Wednesday, January 9, 2013 1:40:33 PM - Middletown Ohio

By Erin N. Davis

Westerville, Ohio –Kokosing Construction Company, Inc. of Westerville, Ohio has been selected as one of the winners of the prestigious 2012 Build Ohio Award. One of six award winners, Kokosing was honored in the Industrial/Heavy Category for the Middletown Coke and Cogeneration Facility in Middletown, Ohio which was completed in January of 2012 for SunCoke Energy Company.

Kokosing received its bronze and green marble Build Ohio award during the 21st annual Build Ohio Celebration in Columbus, Ohio at the Hilton Columbus at Easton Town Center.

Kokosing’s $400,000,000 Cogeneration Facility in Middletown, Ohio supplies AK Steel Middletown Works with 600,000 tons per year of metallurgical coke and electrical power. Along with the coke ovens, the plant includes five heat recovery steam generators, a 50-MW steam-driven power plant, pollution control facilities, and coal & coke handling systems. In addition to completing the site work and utility designs, Kokosing and its subsidiaries self-performed approximately 1,900,000 of the project's 2,100,000 total manhours.

“One factor that made the Middletown Facility an award-winning project was our management team living out the motto: nothing at work is so important that we will shortcut safe work practices for the sake of a deadline,” said President and CEO, Wm. Brian Burgett. In the end, the dedication and foresight of the project management team lead to the definition of a successful project – quality construction, on-time completion, profitability without contract dispute, and most importantly, no serious injury or accident.

The Associated General Contractors of Ohio hosts Build Ohio annually to celebrate the commercial construction industry and recognize contractors for excellence in construction. A panel of retired construction professionals selected the Build Ohio winners based on the following criteria: excellence in client service, meeting the challenge of a difficult job, excellence in project management, and innovations in construction techniques and materials.

In the Industrial/Heavy Category, the winner was selected based on four criteria: excellence in project management, excellence in client service, meeting the challenge of a difficult job, and innovative construction techniques and materials.
