January 25 Update to City Council
Tuesday, January 27, 2009 2:20:19 PM - Middletown Ohio
Weekly Update to City Council
from the City Manager
January 25, 2009

Fire Division
To maintain a healthy relationship as well as to continue progress on common priorities, Fire Administration and the Firefighters Union Local 336 have established a schedule of internal meetings to take place informally each month and formally each quarter for 2009.

Planning Department
The Downtown Development Committee met last week with over 25 people attending.  The purpose of the meeting was to continue work towards becoming a Main Street Community under the National Main St. Program.

FREE Small Business Education Courses
Our Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is in the process of updating the education workshop curriculum to better meet the needs of small business owners.  The SBDC invites small business owners and those who have a home-based business or aspire to be an entrepreneur to complete a quick online survey regarding training and information needs.  Priority in developing and delivering these classes will be based on feedback received.   Contact Matt Eisenbraun, Director, at (513) 727-3686 for additional information.  Survey link: http://biztechcenter.com/coursesurvey.html

Business Openings!
The Middletown branch of National City Bank recently opened. The branch is located in the previous Fazoli’s space at 3359 Towne Boulevard. This office is a full service branch offering a variety of services.
Avalon by Otterbein, a transformational approach to nursing care, will have an open house on February 9.  Avalon offers a small house concept to provide quality care in a neighborhood setting.  The new facility is located on Atrium Drive, north of the Atrium Medical Center.

The Inn at Renaissance is nearing completion of construction and will host a grand opening in March. The Inn is located on Union Road in the Renaissance District just north of the Miami Valley YMCA.  The facility offers personal services and 101 assisted living suites for seniors.

Health Department
Using grant money last year, we purchased an electronic inspection system which was used recently at Skyline Chili and Amanda School.  It worked fairly well but there are still a couple of bugs that need to be worked out by Terraine Engineering.  The system may be a model for the state soon.

Stimulus Package Requests
The City has received numerous requests for projects for the proposed stimulus program that is expected to be enacted under President Obama.  These projects need to be ready to go within a 6 to 9 month timeframe.  The Public Works Department, with the support of Economic Development, has submitted numerous projects for each of these requests.  The majority of the projects are Public Works improvements centered around transportation.  However, there have been opportunities to submit projects related to economic development.  A few projects that have been highlighted include $60 million for our local street resurfacing program, $5 million for Brownfield redevelopment, and $18 million for the Towne Mall redevelopment.
