GOT ART KICKS OFF NOVEMBER 19
With 35 volunteer window washers working last Saturday and 47 artists and 7 art groups placing art of all kinds in those cleaned windows this week, the Art Central District in downtown Middletown will be ready for a party by Saturday, November 19, 4-7 pm.
Middletown has increased the “curb appeal” of the refurbished downtown area by cleaning the storefronts and showcasing the best of regional artists in the windows. The new look officially opens at 4 pm on November 19. Got Art is a project of the Event Managers group sponsored by the Middletown Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The opening night art walk from the railroad to the river along Central Avenue features not only the newly dressed up windows, but eight warm-up spots designated with special signs—some with music, some with artists demonstrating their skill. Fourteen artists will share their talent during the opening event. Works by those artists are included in the six week exhibit. Printed maps of the art exhibit locations, warm up spots and attractions will be available beginning November 19 at the warm-up spots and then later at Light up Middletown which begins on November 25.
The opening of the art show combines with the annual Christmas Tree lighting at Central Avenue and Broad Street at 6:15 pm.
Santa will be on hand beginning at 4 pm
Mayor Noah Powers will welcome the guests
Newly elected Middletown City Councilman William “Kip” Moore will sing
The American Legion Color Guard will present the flags
The Christmas tree has been donated by the students of Wildwood Elementary School. The tree was originally planted in 1994 in the school courtyard by retiring third grade teacher Sherril Ward. Now the tree has grown very large and must be removed to make way for a new school building. The Wildwood students felt their teacher would enjoy “her” tree being used by the entire city in this manner. Fifth Grade Wildwood students have also crafted 50 sturdy snowmen as outdoor ornaments from PVC pipe to dress their tree.
The Got Art organizing committee invites everyone to visit their project during the opening party and throughout the holiday season November 19 through December 31.
