Council Comments May 2008
Thursday, May 15, 2008 9:42:06 AM - Middletown Ohio

By Susan Beagle

At the Middletown City Council meeting Anita Scott Jones noted that representatives of the City Council had attended events honoring Betsy Parr, by the Ohio Municipal Clerks Association at Mohican State Park Lodge, and James “Choppy” Saunders at the Manchester Inn in Middletown.  She also mentioned that Music on Main would be on June 7 and the Multicultural Fest would be on June 14.  She commended the Berachah Baptist church and the park board for their work at Damon Park.

Tony Marconi expressed his thoughts regarding the SunCoke plant rezoning issued to be decided.  He said that he had no problem making business decisions but the human side of this issue had made this issue a difficult one for all council members.
David Schiavone said the council members are working on the issue of the Towne Mall decline.  Some members of council will be attending a retail convention in Las Vegas to explore new ideas for redevelopment of this area and other areas of Middletown.  He stated that Towne Mall will be redeveloped into a nice facility.

Mayor Lawrence Mulligan also mentioned the convention in Las Vegas and his tour of Damon Park after the work of Berachah Church.  He said a street improvement report is coming and expressed his appreciation for all the work that the pothole crews are doing.

This is directed to Mr Marconi:

Please take the time to view the recent council meeting video that has been telecasted this past week, 6/23.

As citizen comments were solicited regarding Section 8, the camera was scanned back to the council table. The seriousness of the situation and the impact to these citizens is not represented by your demeanor. Please be mindful you are representing our community in your actions and appearence.

I couldn't find a proper place to put this on here but I felt it was the closest thing to the subject for me to vent. I am a long time resident of Middletown, and retired from the city itself. Many things have changed since I was actually employed here in middletown, however, I do think that the conduct of the Police Department could use some constructive critism. When one works for the city, their conduct is displayed on and off duty. My wife and I own an establishment here in town, and we do serve alcohol. We don't question our patrons on what they do for a living, and judge them for how many drinks they take. But when a female police officer boldly announces that "this" is where she works, after getting very drunk with her friends, it's not a good representation of what's supposed to be in an 'upstanding' position with the community, it makes those like me lose faith in the protection of our city. I didn't appreciate the rude comments, and the bad language directed to me and my staff, when we approached her on her behavior. Middletown needs officers of good character and upstanding citizenship. If this is what we have resorted to, and there is no one else more qualified than "this" to protect our city, then we should all have something to worry about.

As far as the conduct of the police department, this should be taken up with the Department itself! I agree that I am sure there are some issues in regards to this very thing regarding off duty officers, but it should be handled with their superiors. If the complaint is just ignored since it's against the "police", then it should be taken to a higher official, until the "off duty" female officers know how to act and present themselves.
