Date April 16, 2009 Press Release
The City of Middletown cautions all residents to be on the lookout for potential scams and deceptive tactics involving property improvement projects. In recent weeks, the City sent over 2300 letters informing residents of property maintenance issues to be addressed in a timely manner.
The completion of the work is the responsibilty of the property owner. However businesses and contractors may attempt to contact residents to solicit repair and rehabilitation work. These businesses and/or contractors are not representatives of the City of Middletown and they have not been contracted to inspect or provide services for any residential property.
Chief Building Official Larry Tuttle wants residents to be aware, “Its unfortunate that less reputable contractors may try to take advantage of the City’s positive effort to improve property appearance, but based on contacts made with the City, it’s evident that this may be a strong possiblity. We want to bring this type of activity to our residents’ attention so they are aware and know how to handle the situation.”
When inspecting a property, City employees will drive city vehicles and are required to present proper city identification before requesting access to your property. Soliciting business door to door within the City limits requires a special permit. If approached, residents should not give funds, provide personal information, or grant access to their property to anyone without credible documentation.
The City of Middletown recommends that all owners contact the Better Business Bureau and request a list of references from any contractor solicting services before agreeing to make repairs. Property owners are encouraged to contact the Community Revitalization Department 425-7938 if contractors solicit business door to door without showing the proper permit.
