Members of the Butler County Republican Party Central and Executive Committees met Dec.13 to recommend three candidates to fill newly elected Ohio Supreme Court Justice Sharon Kennedy’s vacated seat on the Butler County Domestic Relations Court bench.
Recommended by the committee were Margot Halcomb, Timothy Evans, and Donald Moser.
Five candidates were earler screened to be considered. One candidate withdrew before the voting began, and by-laws mandate that after each round of voting, the candidate with the least number of votes withdraw until only three remain.
Governor John Kasich is free to appoint any qualified person to fulfill Justice Kennedy’s unexpired term on the Domestic Relation’s Court bench, however, historically Ohio governors have followed the recommendation of the county party of the vacating judge.
The final vote was:
Margot Halcomb: 133
Timothy Evans: 53
Donald Moser: 41
New Ohio Supreme Court Justice Kennedy became the first Ohio Supreme Court Justice from Butler County since 1948 when she defeated Justice Yvette McGee Brown in the November 6 general election and will serve through 2014 when she can run for a full six-year term.
