MIDDLETOWN —
Interest in a dance based on the hit 1985 movie “Back to the Future” became bigger than what organizers thought they could handle.

So they decided to stretch it out to an entire afternoon and evening on Sept. 26 that includes a cruise in of 1950s and older cars and a showing of the movie at Governor’s Square in downtown Middletown.

Mallory Greenham, executive director of Downtown Middletown Inc., was a 1 year old when the movie was first released, said she was excited about working with a group of young local adults to create this event for downtown.

“We were approached by these young adults to do the “Enchantment of the Sea” dance from the movie,” she said.

One of the organizers, Andrew Morris, a local teacher and a Madison High School classmate of Greenham, approached her because the number of people interested appeared to be much larger than originally thought and outgrew the Middletown Historical Society. In addition to Morris and Greenham, some of the others helping to organize the event include Darby Morris and Nikki Short-Tate.

“So far, they’ve sold 150 tickets and it could be as many as 500 people wanting to come based on what’s listed on two FaceBook pages,” Greenham said. “We may be able to handle 350 to 400 people for the dance.”

The dance is now being held from 8:30 to 11 p.m. in the upper level of the Pendleton Arts Center and tickets are $15 a person, she said.

However, more fun activities are planned before the dance begins including a free 1950s classic car cruise-in as well as the iconic DeLorean DMC-12 similar to the time machine car in the movie which will be held from 5 p.m. to dusk on Broad Street.

A free viewing of the “Back to the Future” movie will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. downtown.

The dance will feature a live 50s band and will feature a cash bar with beer and wine, a prom-style photographer, as well as a raffle of unique items from Downtown Middletown businesses. Those interested in coming to the dance are encouraged to dress in their 1950s best.

Greenham said the downtown area will be have features and other decorations from the 1950 to make Governor’s Square look like Hill Valley from the movie. Many downtown businesses will be extending their shopping hours, and joining in on the fun by decorating their storefronts to resemble the movie, she said.

And pray tell, which "Mr. Wet Blanket" would you be referring to middiemom? We have many in the city and on this forum. I liked the 50's and Back To The Future Series. Great idea!
I'm so proud of my hometown and what it has become. Recall 'em all. Let's start over.

Carl Sagan once said, "One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.” The blanket is dry, not wet, in the city of bamboozle.
