Middletown Middle School students face drug, vandalism charges

MIDDLETOWN — Six Middletown Middle School students have been charged with vandalism and possession of drugs during two separate incidents on Oct. 13 and 14.

Valenti said to clean the carpet in the auditorium would cost about $400, according to the police report.

He said to paint the damage to the restrooms and the lobby, to replace the broken glass and the fire extinguisher, and clean the residue from the fire extinguisher, would cost about $1,200 for the auditorium. It also would cost about $1,400 for labor, Valenti said.

IMO, another example of a combination of a lack of parental concern/discipline and the schools having removed any and all forms of meaningful, results oriented punishments for the students and implementing too soft of a program. The student thinking, knowing the lack of severe punishment will occur, has created a student attitude that is not intimidating to them. 

I would hope the schools are going to pursue having the parents pay for all of this damage, rather than the taxpayer. Garnish the parents wages (can't take it out of the unemployment or welfare check-still taxpayer money-put a lien against the house if they own one) until it is paid if they can't come up with the lump sum. Hit 'em in the wallet and it MAY....MAY wake the parents up.

Perhaps the schools can revisit the discipline plan for the district and make it more harsh.....somewhere between where it is now and the way it was back in the 60's when the schools had intimidation factors built into the program.

	For some reason "expulsion" seems to be a dirty word for MCSD under both Price and Rasmussen. Other districts do it -- I'm not sure why we can't.

	Bill, I agree with part of your comment regarding expulsion but not all. I agree that Price had an issue with expulsion. However, I really like the approach that the new admin staff is taking. They are working both sides of the issue. They are both trying to teach the students what proper behavior is (since many parents don't seem able or willing to do it) and enforcing consequences for poor behavior. They are tyring to build understanding of and are trying to build pride in appropriate behavior. The hope is that once students understand (appropriate behavior standards, take pride in meeting the behavior standards and appreciate the consequences for poor behavior) we will not have to suspend or expell students because their behavior is appropriate. Regarding the students at the Middle School they were suspended with the recommendation for expulsion and since charges were filed, the act will be handled in the courts. Their punishment will more than likely include some type of restitution.

Five Middletown Middle School students face vandalism and drug charges MIDDELTOWN — Five of six Middletown Middle School students recently charged with vandalism and possession of drugs during two separate incidents at the school have been placed under house arrest Police said the juveniles were found in the school’s auditorium skipping class Oct. 14. They reportedly had been smoking marijuana in the auditorium, the boy’s rest room and in the lobby of the auditorium at the school, 1415 Girard Ave. School officials uncovered graffiti writings with markers and a fire extinguisher had been set off in the lobby of the school, police said. There were also several broken windows uncovered in the auditorium, police said. It was also determined during the questioning of the juveniles that the incidents also happened on Oct. 13, authorities said. A 13-year boy also was found to be in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia on Oct. 14, police said. All of the juveniles confessed that they had been smoking marijuana in the auditorium while skipping class, according to the police report. Valenti said cleaning the carpet in the auditorium would cost about $400, according to the police report. He said repainting the rest rooms and the lobby, replacing the broken glass and the fire extinguisher, and cleaning the residue from the extinguisher would cost about $1,200 for the auditorium. It also would cost about $1,400 for labor, Valenti said. AS MR. FIORA STATED, RESTITUTION FROM THE PARENTS IS IN ORDER HERE. ALSO NEED TO HAVE THE JUVENILES SPEND A LITTLE TIME IN RESOLUTIONS (OR ANOTHER LOCKUP FACILITY), PARTICULARLY ON THE WEEKENDS WHEN THEY WOULD NORMALLY BE OFF AND RUNNING WITH THEIR FRIENDS, GO THROUGH A DRUG INTERVENTION PROGRAM, ALTHOUGH I QUESTION HOW EFFECTIVE THOSE ARE, AND, MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE JUVENILES NEED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CLEANUP OF THE DAMAGE THEY CREATED. 	One of the news channels did a story and interviewed one of the mothers who said she wanted the full weight of the law to come down on her child and that she was beyond disappointed in her childs behavior.

	This this type of behavoir is looked at as normal by more and more of our young people Im sad to say.Just look at the chaos at these "occupy protests"going on across the country and the endorsement of it by politicians,hollywood and other high profile people.If my kids would have done something like this they would be running to juvenile detention to escape punishment at home.
