Ho-hum. Middletown is great because a technical school is evaluating a culinary school downtown while it houses it at Butler Cty. Partnerships are the key to the marvelous success. The Atirum is such a gem, and Greentree, my, you can get medical field training and degrees. And, UDF is coming, so we have another gas station charging $3.69/ gal and climbing. The Renaisaance, after its developers went bust, is now lowering standards to compete with massive overcapacity and lack of demand. AK has been defined as a cancer cluster and is sued for $20 Mm for malfeasance in Indiana, but they bring 75 jobs to Middletown with SunCoke, after alientating the surrounding neighbors.
The spin just isn't working Mr. Mulligan. How many jobs were to be generated by the Atrium? Why does it take 5-8 years to sell a home in Middletown? Whay are our streets a disgrace, and the only solution is the city offering to fix them with no one moving forward, with residents paying for what they should be getting for taxes? MUM is the lowest enrollment school within the Regional Miami campus, while Cincinnati State does a feasibility study to assess needs and extrapolate student population. In other words: 'Fire, Ready, Aim.'
For most, there is more excitement associated with the all you can eat pancake special for $3.99 at Steak and Shake, than the endless spin recycled in these annual speeches. No one is buying this rhetoric, cynism at an all time high, and a market flocking to get out. Another Night of the Walking Dead. My, what a bright future we have to look forward to Little red Riding Hood. Save us all.

acclaro - went to the protest before and then went home to watch the mayor's speech. I guess, depending on your perspective, you can say we're progressing. Toward what is the real question!
I was struck by the opportunities vs the problems and challenges. If we are going to have all this economic revitalization, why are we worried about our revenue stream? How can we be moving from good to great with a declining population, declining property values, the loss of jobs and failing schools? How can we tout Cincy State when we still do not have a signed deal? And, if we're going to get this deal no matter what the numbers are, if this fails what then? I really don't mean to seem down or pessimistic but there was a lot of contradictions in the Mayor's speech. If everything turns out ideally, we'll be ok. Tell me, has that ever happened anywhere?

I have a real hard time trying to figure out how this technical school is going to improve the lives and conditions of this town. I don't see it happening. Plus I get the feeling that it wasn't Cincy State that approached Middeltown but the other way around. If Cincy State does open what happens if the student enrollment is not at anticipated levels ? And Cincy State appears to be staying all to quiet on this big deal,so I think there is more than meets the eye to all this.
While Monroe & West Chester continue to grow Middeltown is receding into the darkness at a very fast pace. Mulligan is lost in a dream world if he thinks a school & an arts center is going to revive this city. What a joke.

The mayor showed how receptive city hall is to anyone who disagrees in the slightest with their risky schemes and devil-may-care, wasteful spending:
With that kind of attitude, I wish the mayor would’ve given his $4,000.00 speech during one of his semi-secret council work sessions. It would have hidden our town leaders’ “my-way-or-the-highway” attitude from our neighboring communities. |

I think he might like to take that comment back, It looked to me as though he couldn't belief he said it. Not one of his finer moments.

The mayor's speech was chocked full of speculation. Speculation, but no guarantee of growth east and west of the I-75 corridor/entrance to the city. Speculation as to what Cincy State will bring to the downtown area as to activity and jobs. Speculation as to what the Pendleton Art Center will do in the future. Nothing about what is really happening in town. All "wing and a prayer" comments with no indication nor certainty of success for any of these projects. C'mon Mr. Mayor...it is what it is. I would rather hear plans to fix things that are here before our eyes rather than "pie in the sky" dreams.
I take offense at the mayor making the comment that people should leave town if they disagree. I have been here as long as the mayor. I believe we are the products of the 60's generation and know what has happened. He went to Fenwick, I went to Midd. High. We both have experienced the same downward trend since then. He knows what the real story is here. Why sugar coat it with BS Mr. Mulligan? He needn't tell me to leave town. Hell, I've done less damage to this town than he has. The reason to leave town would apply to those who have harmed the town which includes him and his decisions. |

Vet - I agree with you concerning the Mayor's suggestion that if we don't like what's happening in this town we should leave. I also recall the Mayor making the statement that the citizens get more involved in working to make the city better. Better for whom? Only those who agree with the Mayor? I believe we should take the Mayor at his suggestion to get more involved and VOTE HIM OUT!!! The last thing we need in thist town are more people leaving. That's why we have declining city revenues; people are leaving! I'm tired of the "my way or the highway" attitude. You can't have a community if anyone who disagrees is told to shut up and leave. I intend to become very active in this city and I intend to spread a simple, three word message: VOTE THEM OUT!!!

Lets all face reality. There is absolutely nothingpositive the mayor could say or spin his magnificent address. Lets evaluate the downtown deal. The on;ly reason Cincinnati State has any interest is that the ity is begging them to come, buying building with no guarantees to date, and literally giving them the keys to downtown to do what they want. Compare that to what C State has now---limited room and space. They see it as a great deal. But what is their commitment? To date- apparently a plan to open the Manchester as a restaurant and hotel? Kind of like a barber training facility in Dayton. How many would go eat there and stay, based upon the past ternd and simply because its 'Cincinnati State'? Not many.
Now, lets look at the east end. A bust. 60/600 homes built. The Atrium? Its impact has been negligible. SunCoke---a deal that AK initiated the city had nothing to do with. The VA? Another non profit with a handful making a dent on the payroll taxes.
Housing stock? Middletown has enough to last generations. Its spiraling downward faster than Las Vegas.
Open Ltr to Larry Mulligan: Would love to take you up on your offer Mr. Mulligan to leave. Could you absorb my capital loss and have the city write to my attention, a check for $60,000? That's what I have lost in value since paying for my home in 1988. Make me a Perry Thatcher deal, and I'm out of Middletown by close of business today sir.
Now lets access what the city really has done the last year. Nothing. No new development, giving away funds to preserve the legacy of Perry Thatcher, a horrific business transaction with no due diligence, no ROI estimate, no hurdle rate. Heck, who would even invest in the bonds for this project of renovation? School district got thumped by Franklin. Growth bypassing Middletown, aka, Monroe, WC, and Austin Reed exit. In the private sector, the Board would have escorted Mr. Mulligan out immediately, with his box packed with his stapler, files, and a kick in the rear for such poor performance.
Leadership was not on display yet again. It continues daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, and decade after decade. For the 'Insider' the glasses are always colored pink, the sun is always bright, and denial a constant theme.

TonyB, agreed. We need real leaders to step up to the plate and make change occur. Middletown has terrific assets to leverage. It has significant problems. It is time to begin recuiting the proper candidates who can make a difference, face reality, and LISTEN to the people they represent. I would hope many solid leaders step forward, including you TonyB, sj, others.

acclaro - in today's corporate world, Mr Mulligan as the CEO of Middletown, would probably be shown the door with a big fat buyout bonus plus stock options and a nice retirement income. Then the Corporation would come to the taxpayers and say "We're too big to fail, we need a bailout"!!!

TonyB, with all due respect, I can tell you in the corporate world, and I have had the privilege of being a corporate officer of a F500, the best you can do is perhaps a 3 year contract, stock options, and for many at the most senior level below CEO, you're lucky to get a contract at all. I've seen many SVP's/ EVP's fired on the spot, maybe walk with six months severance, and black eyes emotionally, for not being able to recite like a computer, a financial ratio or strategic direction in one of 20 SBU's. It is the Board's that give these big packages, not the shareholders, and there is always that remedy---called litigation, by shareholders whom won't tolerate the stacked Board's gift. Look at Mark Hurd, former CEO at HP.He;s being sued by HP and the shareholders.
I digress, lets focus on Middletown and the PolyAnna continuum.
“I thought it was a very positive but realistic portrayal of our finances,” said Sam Ashworth. “As long as we stress the positive that means we are moving forward.” Lets use some analogies to the above:i) school district stays on CI but a 61.3 is better than a 61.1, so that's stressing the positive
ii) Instead of tearing down the Manchester, we are giving it to C State so we have some institution downtown.
iii) we are changing our regulations at the Renaissance because so we can build more houses as the price point is too large to attract those buyers in the $300,000 range.
iv) we put up cameras because it will prevent accidents.
v) we are buying equipment to pave streets which residents will pay us to do so they don't have to wait 50 years to have the city do what they should have been doing the past 25 years.
As Sam says, if we just say something positive, we are all moving forward. But, if we say what is negative, and real, that means we are moving backward. Lets all say something positive so we can imagine we are moving forward. Dreaming....an escape from reality, |

acclaro - my statement above was partly in jest, however; look at the CEO of Goldman Sachs. Made out like a bandit and then his company had to be bailed out by the taxpayers.
I'm not sure about the positive means we're moving forward. Moving forward also means correcting those things that are problems. Our finances are strained because we have lost population. That is realistic but not positive. We have lost businesses which also contributes to our strained financial situation. Realistic but not positive. It is turning negatives into positive action that moves us forward. By all means, stress the positive; but don't forget that negatives can be turned into positives when you actively strive to correct those negatives. Saying "if you don't like it, leave" is not only negative; it's a a double negative!!!

TonyB, recalling my math, a double - is a + (LOL), aka (-2)(-2)= 4. Sorry, neeed some levity. Funny Larry indicated Mr. Smith's protest was a right everyone had to their opinion but told all whom don't latch on to the double negative theory to LEAVE TOWN!

Wouldn't it be easier to ask the few people who are on council and the upper echelon in the city building to leave town rather than to ask the other 47,970 people to leave? After all, they're the problem here, not the citizens. I would imagine most who know what is happening in this town would want them gone too. I'm not going anywhere. We can all send them packing with the correct candidates and the ousting at the polls of these people who have created this cluster. Most came later than I. Not leaving because the Johnny-come-lately's are in charge.....at least for now. It's still OUR town and we could do something about this. The apathy here is allowing them to run it the way they want.
