At last evening's City Council meeting Fire Chief Botts made one very interesting comment. It was noted that heating/air conditioning systems, etc. need to be replaced at some of our fire stations. I recall him mentioning that $200,000+ was the estimate.
Given the comments of Chief Botts, how in the world could our senior City staff dictate that the $490,000 Department of Energy grant funds be spent on a bike path? Now, it seems that the $200,000+ will need to come from the General Fund. Go figure?

Incredible!!!! A bike path takes priority on spending over the maintenance of the fire stations and the comfort of our firefighters. We could have ten people making this decision. Nine would choose the fire stations to apply the money to. One would choose the bike path. That one would be employed by the city. Common sense and logic is non-existent at the city building. Stupidity must be of epidemic proportion there. Is there an antidote for this?

Self, you and presta and the other malcontents should sut up. the voters have spoken. we know whats best for this city and if we have to bend the rules a little to do it so what?
If the firemen want new air conditioners they'll just have to get a tax increase passed on the peons. we need the bike path as an amenity for execs to draw big business. you dummies don't get it.

Where was the chief when the money was allocated for the bike path ? Surely the heating/AC didn't go bad overnight. Has the chief ever brought this up before now ?
If it looks like a fish and smells like a fish it just might be fishey.

Nelson- Apparently MMF Rules is a person who has signed on to this forum to agitate the group. No doubt some who has no intention of any serious discussion here. Just wants to push buttons. Sometimes, as with flies, if you ignore the pests, they will go away. Hopefully, we can accomplish that here.

Wasn't Chief Botts talking about the Emergency Services Fund, and the $210,000 in total expenditures in 2010 coming from that? |

The Bike Path was all City Manager and Economic Development Director. Senior Staff wanted repairs to buildings.

Maybe our new Council will reverse this decision as one of their first priorities.
A $500,000 bike path extention or necessary improvements to our older fire stations?
Hmmmmm-pretty easy choice.

All our City Council Members were fully aware that many fire stations and other building needed new windows, doors, heating and air conditioning systems…after all it was an ENERGY GRANT. If used for these repairs we may have reduced the City’s gas and electric bill and had a few more dollars still in the general fund. However all Council Members voted YES for the bike path. No logical thinking at City Hall on this matter. |

Well MMF has a point. I'm sure all the new managers of the Dollar General stores (business execs) like to get together Saturday mornings and ride their bikes.

I don't think that the new path even goes anywhere. Franklin has to connect to it at some point.

jag123, what was the response from the city manager and e.d. director when concerns were raised by not using these funds on needed repairs? was the repair option communicated to council after those discussions?

She said that information on how far those dollars would go for building repairs was not available, so spend it on a bike path. This does not go for repairs to the existing bike path, either.

jag I am a tad bit surprised that a decision of such magnitude was made before all information was reviewed. thank you for bringing this to the forums attention. if the City Commission didn't have full knowledge it is hard to place the blame on them but they should be questioning staff on this matter.

I beg to differ with you on this point...the City Council WAS fully aware that building improvements were needed in many City owned buildings.
The completion of the bike path has been part of the downtower's plans for years. We wasted a million dollars on a bike path to no where..and WE the people will get NO bang for these bucks. |

This was pushed by the city manager and eco development director. Council DID NOT have all the info about upgrading city buildings.

jag, how is the bike path economic development related? perhaps the other senior staff members were not as persuasive as they could have been regarding building needs? bike paths are nice features for a community though so maybe the building needs aren't truly needed now.

the city manager does as she pleases, often not taking advice from staff.
