Ford files petitions; 3rd Ward race getting crowded

By Ed Richter | Tuesday, August 18, 2009, 10:33 PM

Time is ticking down for people to file their petitions to run for office.

We now have the city’s second contested race for a Middletown City Council seat as incumbent 2nd Ward Councilwoman Leslie Ford has filed her petitions with the Butler County Board of Elections to retain her seat.

Ford joins John Soppanish who has already filed his petitions to run for the 2nd Ward seat.

A.J. Smith, who has taken out petitions, has yet to file his petitions.

The only other contested race as of Tuesday, Aug. 18 is for the 3rd Ward seat held by incumbent Councilman Tony Marconi who is also being challenged by Joshua Laubach.

However, petitions have been taken out by local lawyer Christopher Atkins and Jeff Michel, who has spearheaded the effort a petition drive to place an issue on the ballot to reduce the size of council and eliminate the ward system.

Only one candidate has filed petitions in the 1st Ward and in the 4th Ward. Vice Mayor Jim Armbruster, who is seeking re-election as the 1st Ward councilman has filed petitions as has local lawyer Daniel Picard who is seeking the 4th Ward seat that is being vacated by Councilman David Schiavone after 16 years.

However, they could face oppositions if Gary Barge files to run in the 1st Ward and if Robert Thoroughman and Paul Nagy files to run for the 4th Ward seat.

All of the candidates have until 4 p.m. Thursday to file their petitions with the Butler County Board of Elections.

C'mon Gary, Paul, Robert--- gotta keep the club members out of the picture. Can't have Armbruster sit in that council seat for another term. Must have action out of that 1st Ward. Armbruster provides none. We need someone who will attack and solve the real problems in this town. Robert- Paul.... c'mon guys. Gotta have a refreshing change from the 4th Ward and leave the Schiavone legacy behind. The 4th Ward folks and the city as a whole, need some positive action. Schiavone moving aside was a good thing for the city. John S.- AJ- let's go! Keep Ford out of the picture in the 2nd Ward- she is not working out on Council. Can't seem to grasp what's important. Doesn't have a clue how to prioritize. Joshua- hang in there. some of us 3rd Warders want a change from Marconi. Gather every bit of info. since he's been on Council and summarize his accomplishments. I'm sure there's enough cannon fodder there to make a case against his lack of accomplishments or to show poor judgement. Some events have been forgotten by the public. Bring them back to life and remind the people what they were and why his decisions were not good ones. We all need to be reminded of past poor decisions and the end results. Expose his voting record on the issues.

Joshua Hammer Marconi on the Section 8 issue and the fact it took 2-3 years to just get an agreement.  Pay attention to First Housing meeting at the next Council Meeting and see if they follow thru on their stance to reduce the Section 8 Vouchers by about half.  The Council has failed in the last 6 months to act on this issue.  They have had plenty of time as the Housing Authority but have done nothing.  Just remember it is Marconi that kept hammering the Fact that "We are the Housing Athority and in Charge".  Now he is being awful quiet, no council comments, etc.  Don't be fooled folks.

Transparency in Middletown city government?  Finally, the Housing Authority Board of Directors (City Council) will have open and presumably televised meetings.  What a development for us lowly citizens??

If they do have open meetings they will no doubt do like council and go into "executive" session to discuss the real issues. These people will never tell what is really going on in this town with any issue. If corruption or any illegal activity is going on it will never make the light of day until the state or federal authorities step in and take action.
No more democrats no more republicans, vote Constitution Party !!

Eddie -

What have you done with this article?  Somebody please tell me where it's located on the Middletown Journal?  Did you correct your little error about Ward 3?
