NIce to see some activity in MADE Industrial Park---especially of a speculative nature. That hasn't happened very frequently in Middletown. With past improvements on Yankee, continued work on Oxford State, widening and improvements on Yankee Oxford State to South University as well as the extension of Yankee via Salzman Rd to Ohio 63 in Monroe, this corridor could see additional investment in the coming years. |

Just wondering how many quotes they got for this work. I would imagine any big ticket item, particularly for a city that is always claiming to be cash-strapped, the requirement would be for at least three quotes. Was this landscape company the lowest quote? Information doesn't say. ------------- I'm so proud of my hometown and what it has become. Recall 'em all. Let's start over. |

Gear Landscaping, Inc., of Fairfield, OH, in the total amount of $117,231.17. BACKGROUND and FINDINGS The Gateway to the City from the east (the intersection of I-75 and SR122) was upgraded by the City and ODOT three years ago. Since that time, the City has been responsible for the upkeep of the area. This year, additional irrigation and drainage work will be completed. This bid is for the routine maintenance (mowing, bed care, fertilizers, weed and insect control, etc.), as well as the median enhancements (necessary demolition work, as well as new perennials, shrubs, mulch, etc.). Three bids were received in the following amounts: Routine Median Company Maintenance Enhancement T.R. Gear Landscaping, Inc. – Fairfield $60,348.00 $56,883.17 Bladecutters, Inc. – Dayton $76,019.00 $56,626.00 Get Your Free Time Back – Trenton $94,640.00 $92,856.75 T.R. Gear Landscaping, Inc., has demonstrated a knowledge of the area and work to be done, and is recommended as the lowest and best bidder. ALTERNATIVES The alternative is to do the work with City crews, but this is a very critical area, as well as a time-consuming project, for which the City is not adequately staffed. FINANCIAL IMPACT There are sufficient funds available in the Grounds Maintenance and Capital Improvements budgets to complete this work. Gateway Maintenance Contract EMERGENCY/NON EMERGENCY Motion Agenda cc: Les Landen, Director of Law Jacob Burton, Director of Finance Scott Tadych, Director of Public Works & Utilities Amy Schenck, Clerk of Council Looks like the low bid for a combo of maintenance and enhancement for the next year. Check the ALTERNATIVES section ... City crews!!! Our poor mistreated crews are to sorry or inept and unsupervised to even attempt such an involved time-consuming project. And under FINANCIAL IMPACT section ... apparently the general slush fund (where virtually all confiscated funds land by transfer check, as needed) will provide sufficient funds. Most of the funding would not need to be spent if the City crews still had equipment (which was sold) and if someone remembered what and how City Grounds Crews should operate. What about Jeff ----/Keep Middletown Beautiful volunteers having a go at the entranceway and landscaping? Little to no cost to the city other than trees/bushes/mulch/grass seed, etc. Labor would be free, right? Didn't the city crew do the Armbruster Park work? If they couldn't do all of the entryway work, they could do some of it saving money couldn't they? How about asking locals with trucks to haul the bushes/trees/landscape blocks and mulch to the site? Think there would be any takers? Is there a liability for the city in having locals participate? Dunno. ------------- I'm so proud of my hometown and what it has become. Recall 'em all.
