A huge fire broke out around 9:30 p.m. last Friday night at the west entrance to Middletown across from the Rt122 West Middletown Bridge.

70,000 SF warehouse on South Carmody Blvd. is still smoldering today as you can see from this video footage.

All three floors were fully engulfed and thick black smoke was billowing when the fire was reported

The building is owned by Whitt Machine Inc. and is located in the 800 block of Central Avenue. Not far from Bicentennial Commons in downtown Middletown.

Capt. Rick Trainer said the flames, some bright blue, reached about 2,000 degrees inside the structure, which was hot enough to melt and twist steel beams.

The cause of the blaze was undetermined.

Firefighters are asking for the public's help. Anyone who took photographs or videotaped the fire is asked to drop off film and footage.

A friend of mine used to work at Sorg Paper (now Bay West), who he informs me used that particular building for storage. He makes a good case for the fire likely having been started by homeless people (most likely unintentionally). When working in the building with a forklift he saw them often.

Perhaps this is an opportunity for the city to improve the west entrance to the city. Even before the fire, the entrance was not too impressive. Weeds have grown up around the Welcome to Middletown Sign.

Hopefully, we can find a better solution for that corner.
