From this week’s City Manager’s newsletter:

Bike Path Update

Good news! The Ohio Historic Preservation Office has approved the Cultural Resources report and ODOT has issued the Right-of-Way permit to begin work on the next phase of the bike path.  Staff is in contact with the contractor to schedule the construction work yet this summer.

Staff is also soliciting quotes to make repairs to the damaged portions of the bike path associated with the sewer repairs completed last month.

Doesn't it seem odd how all of the “Historic” fans are behind all sorts of expensive projects, yet we never hear them say a word in support of saving the truly historic vault at the HISTORIC Middletown Pioneer Cemetery???

Also, while we hear about the fiscal problems that our city is facing…the probable layoffs, cutbacks, lack of funds for infrastructure maintenance, and the like, is there any doubt that they will find the tens of thousands (or possibly even hundreds of thousands) of dollars needed for the repairs to the bike path???

Does it seem to anyone else that current city management cannot understand the difference between “WANT” and “NEED”???

While I support the bike path, you do raise a pretty good question and an interesting observation.

Just curious......has anyone seen any numbers as to the percent of the area population that uses this bike path? Has any data been connected with usage level versus cost of maintaining the path? Just wondering if this project is really justified in relation to money spent. I would speculate that ~ 10-15% of the area population uses this. Same with some of the parks in this city with Smith, Douglas and perhaps Sunset being the exceptions. Are some of our parks worth constant attention and money expediture versus the actual usage? If not, why are we spending money on them and not diverting to a cause that would affect more people?
