That'll Be the Day
Deemed the UKs answer to American Graffiti, Thatll Be the Day takes us back to Britain in the late 1950s, when
postwar austerity was just beginning to give way to a more carefree time and
American rock n roll music was in the air. David Essex plays the rebellious Jim
MacLaine, a wannabe pop star who breaks free of his fatherless working-class
home life and sets out to find a place for himself in the new pop music scene. His
search brings him into contact with Mike, played by Ringo Starr, who takes him
under his wing. As the story progresses we meet a host of rock stars, including
Keith Moon, Billy Fury, and Viv Stanshall.
That'll Be the Dayevokes a
grimly serious working-class England on the verge of a new era. The Beatles and
the revolution they led is just over the horizon and the musicians we meet in
the film are up against the attitude that true rock n rollers had to be from
America. Musical acts like Lonnie Donegan, Adam Faith, Cliff Richard, The Shadows,
Helen Shapiro, and Tommy Steele were making things happen and a new youth
culture was just beginning to stir. Thatll
Be the Day offers a fine introduction to this magical era.
About the Cult Movie Group, convener
John Heyda says that the group will watch and then discuss films that have
been overlooked, overshadowed and/or underrated. Instead of starting out with
familiar cult classics, our group will concentrate on films that have cult-film
potential but havent got the attention they deserve.
