Job posting- June 29th- Journal- Garage Superintendent for the city fleet. Schedules mechanics work, oversees operation- $42,000 to $46,000 plus bennies. High school education required. Is this job needed? Can some other manager do this job and "double-up" on job duties? Could one of the senior mechanics incorporate this position into his current job and be a "scheduler/mechanic/leadman" for the garage? What will this position consist of if filled- shuffle papers/go to meetings or do actual mechanic work? Is this a newly created position, to refill after a retirement or resignation? Now is a time to be streamlining the government, not filling unnecessary positions.

You have to have a boss. Why they are calling it a superintendent I have no idea. I would assume the boss would not be getting his hands dirty as most don't. But someone has to oversee the different aspects of the operation. The pay sounds pretty high to me depending on what the duties are exactly.

It is my understanding that for every laborer in the city they have to have at least 2 supervisors.

When we cut staff due to slacking business, I do any job. And that includes cleaning the toilets and unloading trucks. Everyone at my office helps everyone, even if it isn't their job.

Wonder if that concept would ever work in gov't. Doubt it.

My wife came home tonight and she was in tears.  My first thought was that she got laid off.  So I asked her what the matter was.  She says they froze all raises until 1-1-2010, she was due a raise next week.  I said Ok, why are you crying, you still have a job and Health Care Insurance.

She continues to cry and says, "they cut everyones pay by 4%, until at least 1-01-2010."  So once again I say, "you still have a job and in these times that is great".  Well it took a few minutes to sink in but it did and she realized that I was right and we will survive.

It seems that the City is one of the few entities that does not understand cutbacks.

Pacman that is the problem with ALL levels of government, the people are seen as an unlimited source of income via TAXES. We are lucky enough so far that if the city wants a tax increase it goes on the ballot, but I look for that to change.
