I did like the feel of Dillman's, it felt just like the IGA in Springboro that I grew up with. The only problem we had with Dillman's was the location on Central was out of the way for us to get too. Sadly those type of grocery stroes are dying off. I even heard that the old "Preston's IGA" in Springboro maybe closing as well. That one is dying thanks to the Wal-Mart and Kroger on 73, and Dorthy Lane Market, and Kroger on 741.

Walmart starts out cheap and when they destroy all the competition they slowly raise prices. Has any one noticed the prices lately? They aren't cheap on a lot of things any more.

MIDDLETOWN
Doors close at Dillman Foods Dillman Foods, which has been located at 2100 Central Ave., for 51 years, closed at 5 p.m. Saturday, said Steve Dillman, the third-generation grocer. He said many of the employees were there when the doors closed for the final time. Then they went into the back room and celebrated, he said. He wanted to thank his “loyal customers and the entire community” for their support of Dill-man Foods, which has operated in Middletown for 87 years. He called those years “a wonderful run, but it was time.” Later, he said, it was “a great trip.” Dillman said he’s negotiating to sell the building. He called the pending sale “a pretty sure thing,” but it won’t be finalized for a couple of months. For the last week, Dill-man held an inventory reduction sale. RICK MCCRABB |

I went over to Dillman's last week and pulled up in front of the store, looked up at the sign and all of a sudden I started to cry. I just couldn't go into the store so I returned home.
When I returned home I just couldn't understand why I was so upset but then I relized that it was just another part of my childhood that would disappear forever from the Middletown landscape.
Driving around this neighborhood is now like going to the funeral of a once proud city. |

Although Steve doesn't know or would recognize either my wife or I, we often shopped at Dillman's for the very nice speciality items they offered including the fine cakes, pies, ice cream, and appetizers they had available. My wife especially was fond and found a hit of a wonderful mozella and freshetta wrap they had at Thanksgiving, and another stuffed with salami. It was unique in the fact it offered a nice niche offering like a Dorothy Lane market, and general items available at the large stores. It is completely understandable why they decided to close. To your point: it is indeed tragic complete incompetence, greed, and snobbery at city hall has led to Middletown's death. It abounds all around- no escaping it. I work with many large Fortune 100 companies in cpg/ retail regarding seeing and embracing disruptive forces through technology to knock off a market leader.Middletown is a Blockbuster----not realizing what streaming would do to its model after Netflix, others, entered the market. In time, Blockbuster went bankrupt, bought by lowly Dish, and is selling its items at stores through the bankruptcy process. The difference between a Blockbuster and the city of Middletown you ask? At least Blockbuster realized it had failed, and took action with bankruptcy. Downtown Donham Abbey doesn't even know there exists a problem.
And to think these morons believe they have accomplished anything other than utter and complete ruin. In the private sector, they would never work again. Middletown----RIP. City leaders- manslaughter.

Acclaro I can't wait to hear Mayor Mulligan's State of the City Address. What have they really accomplished over the past five years? |

"One of our most significant accomplishments over the past five years I have been Mayor is passing the ordinance which allows a resident to sit out trash for Rumke only for two days before trash pickup." "This in turn, will make Middletown and its image better."- Larry Mulligan, Mayor
A milestone.

A TRULY DYNAMIC STATEMENT FROM A PROMINENT CITY LEADER........ WITH RELATIVELY LITTLE SIGNIFICANCE. A LITTLE LATE TO BE WORRIED ABOUT THE IMAGE ISN'T IT BUD? THE IMAGE SHIP SAILED A DECADE AGO. THIS, ACCORDING TO LAWRENCE, IS A CITY HIGHLIGHT? AND, A "NOT SO THOUGHT OUT" ONE AT THAT. SITUATION FOR EXPLANATION LARRY---- A RESIDENT AND THEIR FAMILY ARE GOING OUT OF TOWN FOR THE WEEKEND AND WON'T RETURN UNTIL AFTER MONDAY. TRASH PICK-UP DAY IS MONDAY. DO THEY LET THE FULL GARBAGE CANS STAY IN THE GARAGE UNTIL THE NEXT MONDAY OR DO THEY SET THE CANS OUT ON FRIDAY BEFORE LEAVING TO BE PICKED UP ON MONDAY? YOU MAKE THE CALL MR. MAYOR. |

Marsh in Franklin, and IGA in Springboro are also very close to going out of business as well. I was in IGA a few weeks ago and they only had one employee running the registers and customer service.
