AK may idle Middletown blast furnace
PITTSBURGH 05 January 2009 21:07 Some workers at the Ashland, Ky., and Mansfield, Ohio, plants of AK Steel Corp., West Chester, Ohio, were back on the job Monday after being laid off since late November. Multiple sources said the callbacks were the result of furnace issues at AK's Middletown (Ohio) plant that are compelling the company to move material to other locations for melting and processing. Scott Rich, president of International Association of Machinists Local 1173, which represents hourly workers at Middletown, said a hot spot that developed on the blast furnace there is under investigation and may lead to the furnace being idled in the near future. "The furnace (at Middletown) was running at close to full capacity after we idled the blast furnace at Ashland," Rich said. "Since then, we've run into some difficulties. The company said it will take advantage of the economic downturn to temporarily idle its Middletown blast furnace, beginning early in March, to perform extensive maintenance, which is expected to take about 45 days.
