Bus Service Between Oxford and Middletown |

I'm glad to see this as a possibility and hope the City follows through with it. A bus travels between Hamilton and Oxford, which provides an incentive for students to take classes at those campuses. It makes sense that Middletown would also offer bus service to Oxford.

From an efficiency standpoint, how many riders would be participating in this commute in any given week? ( 60 right now) How much is the cost for fuel/ estimated cost for repairs on the buses per year, labor per year to drive the buses, and how does this stack up against the money taken in at $2.00 per trip? ( $5 bucks for reserved trips) It is nice to have a service to the academic community that links these cities , but at what cost to the taxpayer? Is it wise in these economic times? 60 trips per week at $2.00 per trip = $120 bucks. Money will come from two taxpayer funded sources to the tune of 1.1 million. Does it look like a break even venture or will the taxpayer be paying for a white elephant again? So many questions.

Vet, Not sure I can answer your questions, but I think that increased access between Middletown and Oxford could also increase the number of students taking classes at multiple campuses, which could have a domino effect in the communities served. I don't see the "academic community" as separate from the community as a whole.
For example, I know many students at MUM who cannot take classes in Oxford because of transportation concerns. Therefore, those students don't always choose majors that they wish to pursue because they know they can't complete the degree program by only attending the regional campuses. The need to complete a 4 year degree at the regionals was one argument for the BIS degree, which is incredibly popular. Having reliable transportation between the campuses may increase the numbers of students enrolling in classes at MUO as well. The regional campuses have seen consistent growth in the number of students enrolling. I would hope that this development would add to those numbers. I also imagine that folks who are not students would use this transportation. Depending on the schedule, I'd be glad to take a bus to Oxford. I drive there sometimes three or four times a week. I rather have someone else drive, so I can do some reading. I know that Oxford isn't a hub in the way that Hamilton is, so I don't think as many people not connected in some way with the university would use the service, but I don't think this is an argument against having it. Students who take classes in Middletown might also have jobs or internships in town, so bringing more students to Middletown would be good for the community as a whole. Although a lot of students earn their degrees and move away from the college community, I hope that some decide to stay. The regional campuses were established with the idea of providing access to higher education. To me, the bus route is another way the campuses are trying to provide that access. |

Besides, if they had a run leaving Oxford to Middletown at, say 2:30 AM, we could ride over and not have to worry about driving back!!!
