September 2, 2009 AN OPEN LETTER TO MAYOR MULLIGAN Dear Mayor Mulligan, I was aghast at your conduct at last night’s council meeting. After a citizen spoke her mind during the Citizen’s Comments segment you spoke up and berated her for suggesting the City law Director should be reprimanded by the City Manager and he should be asked for his resignation. Now, Mr. Mayor, We have all heard you say repeatedly that Council is not set-up to answer Citizen’s Comments. However, last night you didn’t hesitate to violate your own rule and adamantly belittled Ms. Bronson for her comments immediately after she spoke. Pray tell us, why is an exception like that allowable for one circumstance and not for all circumstances? Is it just when you in your wisdom allow it or just when your temperment allows it? Mr. Mayor, I respectfully suggest to you that you crossed the line last night. You owe Ms. Bronson and the citizens of Middletown an apology for answering "when we are not set-up to answer citizen’s comments". In church we say that the repentance and the confession should be as public as the sin that was committed. We look forward to your humble apology. Oh, go ahead and do it with humility. It will be good for you and the community both. Furthermore, Mr. Mayor, may I respectfully remind you that in America we still have and practice some democracy and freedom of speech. Granted that we are losing both at a rather rapid pace because our leaders make every effort to close the mouths of those who disagree with them. Many of our leaders don’t enjoy the exchange of ideas and the debate and disagreement that built this great country and community. Why, last night, your outburst, the arguing and the debate between citizens and council and the debate among council on serious business matters was a wonderful and stimulating thing to observe. Did you happen to notice that our City Law Director replied to Ms. Bronson himself? Mr. Landen is a seasoned veteran at public debate. That wasn’t the first time he was publicly asked to resign. It doesn’t scare him. Although, I’m sure he appreciated your support. That’s democracy and may its tribe increase. So, in the future, I hope you will find a way to foster democracy by publicly encouraging every citizen to speak their mind and by encouraging council to respectfully respond to citizens comments. That type of encouragement comes about when council members believe that they are not in their position for power but that they are there as representatives of their constituency and that they are indeed public servants . Mr. Mayor, I respectfully ask you to forgive me for addressing you in this forum but a temporary health matter prevents me from coming to the next council meeting. But, I assure you, that I shall be at the very next council meeting possible so that you can publicly reply to me as democracy allows unless you choose to reply here at MIDDLETOWNUSA. Thank you. Sincerest regards and best wishes in your appreciated position as Mayor of our fair city. Paul Nagy |

Nice letter Mr. Nagy. I too, was surprised by Mayor Lawrence Mulligan the Third and his little outburst at the Council meeting last night. I agree and thought the same thing as to him responding to Ms. Bronson's request for the resignation, but espousing the theme of "not prepared to answer (respond) to questions at this time" in the citizens comments. IMO, he was out of line. The letter handed out by Ms. Bronson should have been accepted without fanfare and Mulligan should have asked that he and Ms. Bronson meet in private after the meeting to discuss any issues he may have had. Another example of a public SERVANT not realizing that he is there by the grace of the voting public. Apparently, after they sit down behind that golden throne, they forget who put them there. Mulligan- another one that needs to go for the good of the city. Without a doubt- vote 'em out!!! By the way, speaking of Council meetings- where were all of you last night???? Thought we were all outraged at the 14% HUD/Section 8 increase proposed by Adkins. ???

Is this web site even “set up for a dialogue”??? That must be a really difficult thing to do, and one wouldn’t think that mere “friends in cyberspace” could manage such a task if our esteemed council and the entire City Hall staff cannot accomplish it. On a serious note, it never ceases to amaze me how council members and so many members of city staff look down on the citizens and believe themselves to be so superior in intellect and accomplishments to us mere taxpayers. Apparently, they are just too full of themselves to realize that many of us were handling situations and solving problems WAY, WAY ABOVE their current pay grades back while most of them were still in diapers! (And most of it was WITHOUT the benefit of computers and the internet!!!) Oh well, they’ll grow up someday. Too bad it may not happen until it is too late for Middletown to survive. One more thing: It appeared that everyone wondered “WHAT HAPPENED?” when Mr. Adkins explained about our dire straits and the fact that we have had such below-the-line income statistics since at least the year 2000. The fact is that many of us “cyber friends” have been TRYING to tell them “what happened” for years, only to be chastised by the power structure’s “brain trust” as being negative. Why didn’t anyone tell Mr. Atkins last night that “Things are BOOMING in Middletown!” or attack him for “not looking at ALL the wonderful things that are happening in our city!”??? |

Mike- I liked the comment from Ford referencing "our friends on the blogs in cyberspace"- My response to Ford- I participate on blogs in cyberspace, but I'm not your friend. At least she indicated that she can read and that she does pay attention to what is written here. Good for her!
A comment was made at last night's meeting referencing the 54% low income total for the city. Apparently an increase from 40% according to Atkins in his presentation. ANY increase is bad news for the city, Atkins. We need a REDUCTION Atkins. Preferably NONE in the city, Atkins. Your proposal of going city wide from two targeted areas is not helping either. Why do you people want to bring more of this crap into town. You are lowering the income level, education level, image level, desirability level, attraction level, progressive thinking level and moral level of this town by even having this program. You people are ruining this town by making it an Appalachian welfare community just to receive some Federal money to run the city. You're too damn lazy to generate revenue the right way by producing jobs that will generate taxes through payroll/corporate means. What is the matter with you people? Everything you do is lethal to this city. |

Middetown MUST have some HUD Housing available for those that need it.
It was under Mr. Kohler that the Section 8 situation got out of hand and became a total nighmare for this City...he should me fired. Since the City wants all this federal HUD money they can't cut this program the only thing that they can do now is try to clean this mess up with greater over site of this program. I wasn't impressed with the answers from CONSOC or the City Council last night. |

But "Middletown is BOOMING", or at least that is what we've heard in the past! (Where were such comments last night???)
And we have enough money for council to have authorized an expensive study for a NEW "Downtown Plan"--or DID they?? Exactly WHEN did they authorize that, and what was the ordinance number???

My favorite part about the Mayor is when some poor sap come to the mike during citizens comments and ask's a question. Mr. Mulligan huffs that "we're not set up for that here."
Don't expect any change soon.
My second favorite part etc is Mr. Marconie. Does anyone ever notice that most times any issue actually starts to get some serious conversation or debate going, he'll burst in with "Let's move on!" or Let's move on, we've spent enough time on this.
I'm nominating him for a new handle called, "Let's move on Marconie."

The City Council debating over the City Charter concerning the Wards will no doubt be receiving notices from Jerry Springer. Hard for me to swallow that 1300 signers of the referendum swayed Mr. Schiavonne's vote. I'd rather he just said let the majority have their say. This is a Democracy let the people vote.
Thank you Mr. Schiavonne , YES WE WILL VOTE! and prove that 1300 goopd ole boys will not be asllowed to run this city. The majority will vote to keepthe ward system so everyone will be represented equally and also vote to remove Council member up for re-election in Novemberthat are responsible for the direction and demise our City is heading in.

Marconi cracks me up. If you watch him during a meeting it looks like he's fighting back a laugh the whole time. Many times he bursts out laughing, or smiles real big like he's about to laugh. Hilarious.... Has anyone noticed Marconi when he looks into the camera and makes faces occasionally? That's also extremely funny. |

Mike Could it be that Mr. Adkins wants all the restrictions removed from this CDBG money under this 54% slum rule so he can again request that the restriction be removed from the $20 Million that the City will be getting in December? YES SIR MR ATKINS WILL ENFORCE THIS RULE AGAIN
