The Every Child Every Promise report says - "20% of our young people do not have caring adults in their lives. This number is higher for the disadvantaged."
"4 in 10 young people say their parents are not involved in their educations."
Middletown City Schools has almost 60% disadvantaged students. Some schools are almost 100% disadvantaged.
How do you think this lack of parental involvement - and the disadvantaged rate - affects the ability of the schools to meet AYP and provide an effective education for 'all' students, including those whose parents are involved and who are not economically disadvantaged?

I don't think anyone would argue that the schools' low yearly scores are entirely to be blamed on the school administration and staff. Yes, it's a sad thing that many in Middletown are poor, and it definitely affects the home lives of a very large percentage of our students.
The school board can be criticized though, parents can't. The blame for all the schools' problems only has one target to aim for, whether it's right or wrong. |
