Plans for a new prison in Middeltown would include adding approximately 150 jobs and add to Middeltowns tax base. Demolition of Towne Mall would provide the land needed. Steel for the construction of the prison would be provided by AK for a nominal cost to the  city & state. Middletown has the medical & denistry facilities that would benefit also. An all around plus for the city.

Since Middletown is not any place that a business would want to relocate to a new prison is ideal since overcrowding is a problem at LCI.

Although I am a proponent of building a prison when one is needed and having one in Middletown would create some much needed jobs and generate revenue for area businesses. Not sure if the Town Mall area is the place best suited for a prison

The Towne Mall land would be ideal. Close proximity to the interstate, people traveling the interstate would see the prison and thus be enticed to stop at local restaraunts and if they are lucky to discover where the downtown area is and explore that.

The prison could be a minimum security for low level offenders. Also Middletown city jail could use it to house overflow for when they get the license plate scanners & red light cameras. The new impound lot could also be built along side the prison. Inmates could run the impound lot and save the city a great deal of money. The possibilities are endless with a new prison.

endless possibilities for sure, and on the east end!
Close to the Atrium, to rush the stricken inmates.

A beautiful message for those entering the city, and there is no more need for the mall, since we will all be shopping(and working) at the new Monroe complex anyway.

Anyone heard that Kroger now wishes to go adjacent to the new mall and abandon their new rt.63 location? Crazy rumor?

Hey--the abandoned car lots/dealerships could also function as the adjacent impound lot!

This economic development plan is really starting to come together!

"Sick,disgusting and offensive"?
Of course we are! And much more!
Which qualifies us as premier "movers and shakers" around here!
All for your betterment, even though you live in our next targeted annexation area.

Hey mad mom--we may soon cross the bridge and start working on that Madison Inn intersection next!  See ya for happy hour! Maybe we can shoot some pool 2gether!

Maybe we could call ourselves Making Middletowne Functional.
MMF sounds perfect!
Now we can get to work on lining up the next round of Council ward candidates(all on board with our "agenda" of course!) However we might STRESS issues instead of AVOINDING them.

Wow--this whole Economic Development plam is really coming together!

Now that we have established the former Town Mall as the next "upscale" area criminal detention/re-habilitation site". and the soon-to-be vacant car dealership locations as prime impound lot areas, we can now focus on our soon to be upscale Downe Towne business locations! The area surrounding the Atrium for physical re-habilitations could be supplimented by the organizations specializing in criminal re-habilitation to create a unique one-stop re-habilition complex.

With the deservedly growing success of 56 Degrees, the spectacular Beau Verre complex, the upcoming Broad Street Bashes and the Art Central Foundation festivities, we can now look to broadenng the downtown upscale unique boutique(even rhyming!) shopping/dining options. A coffee/tea shoppe, wireless/LAN parties, a micro-brewery(upscale of course!), serving upscale burgers and dogs(to compliment 56 Degrees--which does not cater to the beer/burger crowd), re-establishinng what is left of the Sorg Opera house or Studio as a classic movie/live music venue(maybe the micro-brew location also?), and numerous professional starter offices for doctors, lawyers, media options.

For a while hard hats should be provided, so those browsing the area won't have their skulls crushed by falling debris from the rotting upper levels of the beautiful shoppes below.
Those upper levels would, of course, be transformed into upscale living quarters for the young professionals and families moving into the area to take advantage of the growing business situations engineered by our active Economic Development dept.

This would be the foundation for the true return of balance to our community overall. Something for everyone in all areas!

Obviously major retail options and shopping will be flocking to the new Monroe complex to further enhance the local ambience.

Are you guys serious? This is the worst idea I have heard in such along time. A prison where the Town Mall sits. To think that people would drive down the highway and see the prison and want to stop here for a meal is ..... ridiculous. That is just what  our town needs a prison in the one part of town that still looks livable. I hope this is a joke, if its not then I will see all of you back here in a few years to complain about the prison that you think is such a good idea.

No..No.. Spider...You have this all wrong...I'm the designer on this blog...I think the new prison needs to be placed in the old Swallens Building since it has that HISTORIC PRISON LOOK. Then the inmates could watch all the activity going on downtown. Ya know they need a little entainment also. LOL

MadisonMom I'm really unnerved & a little upset that you do not support a pliable economic solution to help the city. This is quit disturbing to say the least, but each citizen is entitled to his/her opinion and to voice that opinion. By proposing a prison/detention facility it offers hope to a fledgling community such as Middeltown. Many a community have been saved from economic disaster by implementing such ideas. While not as attractive as some large factory,a prison/detention facility would not pollute nor ever have employee/employer problems such as strikes or layoffs. The impact from a positive economic infrastructure such as this would benefit future generations of working class Middletonians for decades to come.

I like it Scrap!- Great theme for the city. This is a great partner for our "Section 8 capitol of Ohio" theme also. This new prison, while starting out as just minimum security, perhaps, could blossom into a big time full-fledged maximum security prison without us even knowing it!!! (hey- just like LCI did!) This new prison would bring jobs to our Middletown folks, probably as guards/lower pay ranges of course , as we only have about 12% here in town who have college degrees. The big money jobs would have to be recruited for from out of town where the "professionals" live. A great gateway to the city from I-75. As you make that ramp turn from either direction, one would immediately be impressed by the gradual transition from The Drury Inn to Bobby Evans and the bank to seeing a very impressive mammoth structure with the guard towers, high fences, bright lights and (hopefully) landscaping provided by the PRIDE group. While sitting high on the hill on the patio at the future Lonestar Steakhouse, one could gaze about taking in the prison ambiance as they devour a nice steak. Bring the fam!!!! The downside- years after the prison is built, we'll have to pay attention to those pesky rusty gutters and paint peeling that may be present. We don't want to let that paint/rust thing slip as it would tarnish our new-found reputation as one of the 10 most successful cities in America.

Great thinking, Vet!!
And the city thought that they needed to go outside to ind economic development people!
I forgot all about PRIDE getting involved to spruce up the area.
You DO realize that this is the EAST end, so this new "facility" would be for white-collar upscale "professional" criminals. They could order out to the various near-by restaurants for delivery also. Plus we just make a quick trip to Lowe's to fix those gutters.

They probably are joking......at the expense of us. We take them too seriously.
They are important people who inform us little people, who don't know any better. They know what's best for US and the citizens of this town. Please read other posts, such as,,City Council, etc.

While it is impossible to build a facility in downtown other than a new city jail it is not impossible to build the facility on the Towne Mall property. We believe that a prison built on that land would not interfere with the normal visitors and patterns of people coming off I-75. As for employment the position of warden probably would be chosen from outside the area, but other positions would be filled from local population. The pay scale would be as follows : uniformed guards $ 40,000 yearly/onstaff nursing $ 35,000/administrative duties to be determined with experience. Naturally the warden position would be the highest paid and with benefits. Inmates would perform kitchen duty as well as janitorial jobs. Landscaping would be contracted with local companies on a lowest bid basis. Thus providing even more jobs and opportunities for the local economy and surronding areas.

Actually, the Cincinnati "Workhouse" was a well-known, national landmark for decades just off I-75 near downtown Cincinnati until its demise in (I think) the 1970's.  Tourists would pull onto the shoulder of the busy interstate to snap photos of it.

Actually, few people understand the pay structure in the prison system…oops…Correctional System. Between Lebanon Correction Institution (LCI) and Warren Correctional Institution (WCI) there are 162 people who were paid OVER $60,000 in 2008!

The highest paid person at EITHER institution was a NURSE at LCI who made $100,340.

There were a total of nine LCI employees who topped the LCI warden’s salary of $80,340. There were a total of ten nurses and a nursing supervisor who made over $60,000.

At WCI, there were 32 employees who bested the warden’s salary of $76,362, including eighteen nurses and “Psychiatric/mr nurses”. The top earner at WCI, who was paid $96,228, was a “Psychologist supervisor”.

I know a few LCI employees, and the ones that I know are quality folks. One ranks among my best friends and closest confidants.

There are no “guards” at either institution, but dozens of the “Correction Officers” and all of the correction supervisors made over $60K.

Maybe we should annex LCI and WCI??? LOL
