Roof collapses in heavy rains in Middletown

By Chelsey Levingston

Staff Writer

The roof of a building on South Main Street in Middletown collapsed this morning, and fire crews are on the scene.

The building is next door to Middletown homeless shelter Hope House, which is being evacuated as a precaution, a Middletown dispatcher said. The roof collapse was reported at 9:37 a.m.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

Someone Please tell me that this isn't the Rose Furniture building that the city just gave to the investment group.....Would this cause them to back out and leave the city hanging? Or is the deal completed and it is now their mess?

If the city still owns it then they need to tear the mess down and fix the hope house if they are liable for it! And get over it.

I heard the papers were signed Friday but it hasn't been recorded yet. So the city dodged that bullet. I feel sorry for the Koons.

I think they updated the article or I missed this the first time...

"However, the group Historic Rose Furniture LLC stepped in, announcing intentions to salvage the 109-year-old downtown building. City Council in August approved a deal to give the former Rose Furniture building to the investment group to restore and reuse the structure. In the deal, the city also gave the developer $300,000 to stabilize the building and make repairs.

The deal closed Friday, and the deed has yet to be recorded, Mike Robinette, one of five investors of Historic Rose Furniture, said."

They all are making $ on side deals. Mike Robinette a partner, friend of JG, former ED. Journal should be writing about local
corruption, not Josh Mandell.

I don't think Mike and J.G. are friends, didn't she relieve him of his job. IMO But Acclaro you certainly are right about the corruption. But no one listens. You can't go to the Middletown police because she would shut that down in a hurry,I don't know if Butler Co. sheriff's office can help or not.???

Attorney General- State of Ohio with the evidence in hand and an appointment perhaps? City police....sheriff.....locals can't do anything about it, can they. Gotta convince the AG that corruption has occured first. Then indictments, then the court scene.
I'm so proud of my hometown and what it has become. Recall 'em all. Let's start over.

From MJ:
Collapsed roof may lead to building demolition
By Rick McCrabb

Staff Writer

MIDDLETOWN —

Owners of a historic Middletown building have been given 24 hours by the city to decide whether they will demolish the structure or complete repairs after heavy rains this past weekend caused its roof to collapse.

A structural engineer, hired by the owners of Historic Rose Furniture LLC, inspected the former Rose Furniture, 36 S. Main St., on Monday and offered two options: demolish the building or install steel beams to stabilize the structure, said Larry Tuttle, chief building officer for the City of Middletown.

The roof at the former Rose Furniture, 36 S. Main St., collapsed Sunday morning after heavy rains swept through the area. The building is located next to the Hope House Mission Center for Men, and it remains unclear whether the shelter is inhabitable, said Sandra Snyder, director of community relations.

After the roof fell around 9:30 a.m., Snyder said the 25 residents were moved to a wing of Hope House farthest from the damage. She said she was told that a beam in the furniture store could break and possibly shatter the shelter’s front glass windows. A section of South Main Street was closed Sunday and Monday as a precaution, city officials said.

The former Rose Furniture building was condemned in May as unsafe for occupancy, according to city records. The city acquired the building at no cost in 2011. Plans were made in May this year to demolish most of the building, except for the façade.

But on Friday, two days before the weather-related incident, Historic Rose Furniture LLC, a private investment group, closed on a deal to take over ownership of the 109-year-old building. City Council agreed to give the developers $300,000 to stabilize the building and make the renovations, according to the deal.

One of the investors, Stephen Coon, said the group knew the roof needed repairs, and even before the collapse, it was going to be replaced.

Coon said the group to have the building renovated and leased by Spring 2014.

He said the investment group plans to announce additional acquisitions of downtown properties in the coming weeks.

“We like Middletown,” he said. “We will see what we can do.”

Rose Furniture last operated in 2005, and Tuttle said the building has been “neglected” for a number of years. He said the last time he was in the building, buckets were on the floor.

Snyder said the homeless shelter had planned to find another location, and after Sunday’s incident, that timetable may have to be moved up. She said Hope House remains “committed” to Middletown and the new location would be located in the city limits and on the bus line.

The homeless shelter is not able to serve lunch to the public until further notice, according to Snyder.

Every morning is the dawn of a new error...

Hmmm.... "additional acquisitions of downtown properties in the coming weeks."
Well well well it seems that Mr. Robinett and Mr. Coon are going to relieve the city of any remaining properties in "Their Downtown". Will we see more sweet real estate deals between this group and City like Rose Furniture?
Either way these are still deals of desperation?

Like the loan from the city to a local grocery store chain that is now just one little store. The other stores being sold by the son of the founder so he can cash out and go to florida?

Word on the street…
Several offers have been made on the Manchester Inn however the City has turned down all these offers.
Several years ago they also turned down an offer to use this property for elderly housing.

Is this building on Mr. Coon’s list also?

Miss Judy wants ths building to be removed.....

lol m29
between Nelson and yourself, there is enough resentment and nastiness for a city much larger than Middietown.

I take much pride in my family business and a successful 87-year run as an independent business in this city.
We have played to the 50s-60s-70s-80s local economy
We adjusted to the 90s-and 2000 era brought on by decisions by your cronies and you.

notice that we have never asked for a mass bail-out from the city or debt to be forgiven

Have never taken anything from this city, and have given back 10-fold and will do so again today.
Simply because we are greatful for decades of support and are fortunate to be able to help those deserving in need.
I have lived here for my entire life--hopefully will always live here.

Why are your issues personal with me, yet thick with decades of a bungled city administration?
Maybe it is YOU who has been a long-term taker?
