The majority of the public are working at 8AM on a Wednesday. How about an evening meeting, say about 7PM on that same Weds. Many, who would be interested in how Cohen and the MMF work , could attend, including me. Just a thought. Wonder if there is public feedback asked for in this meeting. I would be interested in knowing how they prioritize job growth and selection to stimulate this "economic strategy" of theirs. What types of jobs are they trying to obtain, are they of the livable wage kind, and their game plan to get there. So far, they haven't shown me anything that would make a real difference to the town.
I'm so proud of my hometown and what it has become. Recall 'em all. Let's start over.

How about if TVM tapes and broadcasts the meeting?
Would be interesting to see who is involved and what they have to say.
This is a good group of people.
Now that they are sitting on public funds, they should make their defined direction public IMO.
They could gain more support(maybe)!

Group seeks tenants for downtown building

By Michael D. Pitman

Staff Writer

MIDDLETOWN —

Earlier this year the MPH Group, a limited liability corporation of several greater Butler County business men and women, purchased the building at 1024-1028 Central Ave.

“We believe that downtown Middletown is clearly moving in a positive direction as a destination to learn, shop, work and play,” said Phillip Harrison, a member of MPH, or Making Progress Happen. “Most of the members of our group were already downtown property owners, business owners and investors so our investment in this building is not our first effort at helping the revitalization.”

Some of the group’s members already have an ownership stake in downtown Middletown, and he said nearly all of MPH’s members have been looking at similar opportunities in the past few years.

“We’ve been committed to the recovery for years because we truly care about our community and our downtown,” Harrison said. “We want Middletown to once again be proud of its downtown. And we are certainly not the only ones investing in downtown.”

Most recently the building at 1024-1028 Central served as the Middletown headquarters for the re-election campaign of President Barack Obama.

The group wants to bring one, or possibly more, tenants into the building, said Harrison, who owns Art Avenue Custom Framing at BeauVerre at the Square.

“We are looking for potential tenant, or tenants, who would bring a viable enterprise and valued service to the Middletown community,” he said. “It is our hope that our investment in this building will further the efforts at Making Progress Happen in our downtown.”

Cincinnati State’s numbers are better projected

Cincinnati State Middletown is being received better than expected, according to the college’s financial books.

The downtown campus of the technical & community college is 63 percent over its projected year-to-date revenue budget, and is over the estimated credit hours for the year, said Michael Geoghegan, finance director at Cincinnati State.

“We’re projecting 6,000 credit hours for the year and we’ll get close to 10,000,” he said.

For the fall and spring semesters, students have registered for more than 8,000 credit hours. Geoghegan projects students will register for about 2,000 credit hours for the summer semester.

And for the next school year, he projects even more credit hours.

“This year is very challenging because we didn’t have a chance to get out in the high schools last spring,” Geoghegan said. “Once we have an opportunity to get the word out to the high school, we’ll be projecting much greater revenues next year.”

Between in-class and online registration, around 600 students will be taking classes from Middletown. The school started the year with just more than 350 students.

Geoghegan said the “good brand” and course offerings and certificate programs are attractive for students in Butler County, and the surrounding areas.

“We knew it would be a success and (the numbers are) confirming that,” he said. “We’ve had great support for the community.”

By the numbers

Cincinnati State Middletown is having a pretty good financial inaugural year. Here is a look at their revenues through Jan. 31:

Projected annual budget - $1.5 million

Year-to-date projection - $548,000

Year-to-date actual - $893,000

Pottery studio joins diverse Towne Mall businesses

By Rick McCrabb

Staff Writer

MIDDLETOWN —

Lisa Little is big on taking chances. Last year, she opened a pottery studio in Poasttown, then moved the business, named The Splattered Platter, to Central Avenue in downtown Middletown.

Then last week, she moved her business again, this time to the Towne Mall, which, since being purchased last year by a California-based investment group, has become a popular destination for diverse companies. Recently, a wig salon opened in the mall, and on Monday, All About You Catering Co. will serve its first breakfast.

Little said she isn’t abandoning downtown, as much as she is riding the wave toward the East End.

“There is just so much opportunity here,” Little, 42, said recently while sitting in the mall. “This mall is going to come back and I wanted to jump on board and watch it grow.”

Since opening less than two weeks ago, Little said her website — www.thesplatteredplatter.com — has received 1,000 hits and she has received 150 emails from potential customers.

She recently booked a pottery party for about 50 children with disabilities.

Her downtown location was 1,200-square-feet, and the Towne Mall site, in the former Murray Bros. general store, is 1,500. Besides its size, she was drawn to open a business in the mall because of its additional hours and foot traffic. She also believes downtown will be revived, but she said: “I didn’t have the time to wait.”

Little called herself “a successful person,” but she doesn’t rate whether she’s a failure simply by the cash in the drawer. She wants to make money, sure. But for her, it’s more about the experience.

“If kids leave here with a smile,” she said, “I feel successful. It’s rewarding.”

She said The Splattered Platter offers “fun for all ages,” said Trisha Hall, mall general manager. She called the business “unique” and said it fits in well with the surrounding businesses.

Little said children 7 and older will be allowed to work in the studio while their parents shop other mall retailers.

“It’s all about having fun,” she said. “I want to give them a great experience and a reason to come back.”

Cincinnati State’s numbers are better projected

Between in-class and online registration, around 600 students will be taking classes from Middletown.

OK, WHAT IS THE BREAKOUT FOR THE 600 STUDENTS? IF MORE ARE "ON-LINE" STUDENTS, THEN THAT NEGATES THE FOOT TRAFFIC AND LOWERS THE IMPACT ON THE DOWNTOWN THEME OF "MORE PEOPLE COMING DOWNTOWN" BY CITY LEADERS, IT ALSO INHIBITS THE REASON FOR POTENTIAL BUSINESSES TO OPEN IF LESS CLIENTELE.

NUMBERS SOUND GOOD. STILL TOO EARLY IN THE GAME TO PROJECT ANY SUCCESS AS TO BENEFITING THE DOWNTOWN AND IT'S GROWTH.

I LIKE THE CATCHY LITTLE NAMES PEOPLE GIVE THEIR GROUPS. MIDDLETOWN MOVING FORWARD....MAKING PROGRESS HAPPEN......AND THE GROUP OUT OF CITY HALL.....DISASTERS ARE US.
I'm so proud of my hometown and what it has become. Recall 'em all. Let's start over.

"RIDING THE WAVE TOWARD TO EAST END".......HMMM. I KNOW THAT USE TO BE THE FOCUS WHEN WE HAD COMPETENT LEADERSHIP WITH NO PARTICULAR PEOPLE TO PLEASE IN TOWN. THE CONFLICTS WITH THE ACTUAL ACTIVITY WITH THE "WAVE" BEING IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA NOW. ONE COULD CONCLUDE THE EAST END HAS BEEN ABANDONED AS TO FOCUS LATELY, RIGHT?

Her downtown location was 1,200-square-feet, and the Towne Mall site, in the former Murray Bros. general store, is 1,500. Besides its size, she was drawn to open a business in the mall because of its additional hours and foot traffic.

MORE "FOOT TRAFFIC AND ADDITIONAL HOURS" AT THE MALL.

She also believes downtown will be revived, but she said: “I didn’t have the time to wait.”

"DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO WAIT"(FOR THE REVIVAL).......PEOPLE HAVE BEEN WAITING SINCE THE EARLY 70'S FOR A REVIVAL. MONEY HAS BEEN WASTED, IDEAS HAVE BEEN EXECUTED AND FAILED, POOR DECISIONS HAVE BEEN MADE MANY TIMES.......WONDER HOW MANY OTHER BUSINESS OWNERS DOWNTOWN FEEL THEY TOO "DON'T HAVE TIME TO WAIT"?

THIS STORY KINDA PUTS A SMALL DENT IN THE CONFIDENCE IN ANY DOWNTOWN MOMENTUM THAT HAS BEEN BUILT, DOESN'T IT? WONDER IF OTHER DOWNTOWN BUSINESSES WILL FOLLOW AS THE MALL DEVELOPS? IF SO, THE DOWNTOWN WILL BE BACK TO SQUARE ONE AGAIN.
I'm so proud of my hometown and what it has become. Recall 'em all. Let's start over.

Vet
Ms Little must not have signed a lease at her downtown location.
I was also wondering if others will move to the mall.
Wonder if the rent in downtown buildings are the same as at the mall.
