You state, "I just don't think that having city employees pay an extra $100.00 will solve anything." No one said it would solve all of the issues with the City but the City is strapped for money and a cut of $500k is a start. If it is good enough for a significant number of Citizens to pay a larger share of their Health care costs why not the City Employees. I don't see in the Constitution where Public Employees are guaranteed the right to low cost health Care at the expense of the City itself. You furhter state,"Leaving people with $100 less a month to spend in the community does not possitivly inpact the community as a whole." I guess taking $5,000,000.00 out of the local economy in the form of a Public Safety Levy on income, impacts the City Positively. Is the Cities worker dollar better than the Citizens dollars or did I miss something. Pagans Further states, "I also don't agree with "messing" with someones benefits that they work for and expect." What workers expect and get are two different things in this economy. Raising the citizens taxes impacts them, some severly...but that's OK, as long as Public employees get what they expect. I am lost on this logic. Further stated by Pagans. "I am sure if your employer asked you and your co-workers to pay an extra $100.oo a month for thier benefits that it would no go over well, if at all." The private sector is expecting and in many cases demands that its employees pay a greater share of their Health care expense and this practice is the norm and not a rarity in the Public Sector. Unfortunately Public employees seem to be immune to this. Just for your info I had to cancel my Health care effective Pagans quote of the day, "I also feel there are other more protuctive solutions to budget cuts, like lets see, I wonder how much the city pays for bottoled water at council meetings? do they really need the bottled water? what is so wrong with the city water that they don't drink it in place of the bottled water? If you look, you can find all kinds of wasteful spending...." I am sorry Pagans but it took me a while to get up off the floor after laughing at this one. You compare 10 bottles of Water every two weeks at a savings of maybe $250.00 a year to saving $500,000.00 in Heath Care Premiums. I am sorry but this shows your entire lack of understanding the situation and I am with Spider on this one. WTF? And finally we have, "I just don't view health benefits as on of those wastful expenses." I don't recall anyone saying Health Care benefits were wasteful. I agree with Health Care for everyone. I also agree with the City Workers paying their fair share as many if not most Private Citizens do. Pagans it is simple Economics 101. On the left you have x amount of dollars to run the City on the right you have City employees who need to be paying a greater share of their Health Care costs as most do in the Private Sector. The City is running out of money. The citizens are tapped out when it comes to taxes. If This is not Rocket Science 202 Pagans it is basic economics which every Private Sector business understands and you know what the funny part is how many Business Owners are on Council and they simply don't get it as far as the City is concerned. Pagans you obviously don't get it. |

Here you go Pagans, Raises in cost for the many People who can least afford it: Medicare Drug Plans Increase, Double in Some CasesFriday , November 14, 2008 Robert Clark describes himself as a bit of a tightwad. So he's a little perplexed about the news from his Medicare drug plan. His monthly premium will rise from about $25 a month to about $41 a month next year. And his wife, June, will face the same increase. Clark, of Cumming, Ga., emphasized he just wants to be treated fairly. "I've always been careful about my money," he said. "I don't understand why it has to double." While the increase falls short of a doubling, it's clear the Clarks, as well as millions of other seniors and the disabled, face hefty premium increases next year for prescription drug coverage. Among the top 10 drug plans in terms of enrollment, the average monthly premium will increase anywhere from 8 percent to 63.7 percent, according to an analysis from Avalere Health, a management consulting firm. Those plans also are reducing the number of medicines that they'll cover by about 9 percent. The most popular plans will cover about 2,100 drugs, on average, a drop from slightly more than 2,300 drugs in 2008, Avalere found. In short, the plans generally are asking Medicare beneficiaries to pay more for less during an increasingly difficult economic time. "A number of factors are pushing plan pricing up," said Dan Mendelson, president of Avalere. "Seniors are using more branded and generic drugs. Drug prices went up a little bit as well. But perhaps most important, a number of plans — notably Humana — concluded that they underpriced and are making up for lost time." A new drug benefit under Medicare kicked in at the beginning of 2006. All 44 million elderly and disabled beneficiaries can enroll in a private drug plan approved and heavily subsidized by the federal government. But the government subsidy next year, $53.97 a month for the typical enrollee, covers only part of the costs. All but the poorest participants also pay monthly premiums and co-payments. Participants don't have to stick with the same company, though. From Saturday through Dec. 31, they can choose prescription drug coverage from dozens of insurance plans operating in their state. "I'm going to shop around," Clark said. Federal officials urge seniors to follow Clark's example, even though polling indicates that most won't, in large measure because of widespread satisfaction with the program, referred to as Medicare Part D. "Plans change. Some plans have increased their prices. But also you change, meaning the drugs that you're taking, or your health status might be different," said Kerry Weems, acting administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Medicare officials report that in every state, beneficiaries will have access to at least one prescription drug plan with premiums of less than $20 a month. The one exception is Alaska, where the lowest- priced plan is $23 a month. The centers include drug plans as well as plans that offer more comprehensive health benefits, called Medicare Advantage, in their calculations. About 7.6 million people get drug coverage through a Medicare Advantage plan, while 17.4 million are in the drug-only plans. Avalere analyzed only the drug-only plans. Among the 10 most popular drug-only plans, customers of Humana Inc., such as the Clarks, will experience the biggest price increases. The company's enhanced plan is jumping from $23.34 to $38.21, on average. The premiums for another major plan, the AARP Medicare Rx Preferred Plan, will go up 15.5 percent. |

The auto industry bailouts are a disaster in the making, and should not occur(haven't we learned already from the un-monitored financial center bailouts?)
50% of the auto bailout would go to keep bennies and pension funds solvent.
Kinda sounds like how our city govt. thinking and how the city is being managed.
$81.18 per hour wage/bennie costs for UAW workers, as opposed to $48 for Toyota(who also makes better cars--which consumers prefer).
As with the financial implosion, the auto industry has brought this meltdown upon themselves, and refuses to change their methods of operation. Let them go chapter 11 and be re-organized. When a proper, FUNCTIONAL business model/plan is in place, then look at some tiype of support.
Nationalization and socialism has never fixed any business or nation so far.
You simply can't live beyond your means for long.
And you can't expect others to always atone for your poor judgements.
How can we pick and choose whom to bail and whom to let fall?

Arwendt this conversation started over on the antiquated Middletown Journal Board where you can't post more than 3 sentences without the Journal's board refusing to accept your post. So I had to move my response over here to adequately respond to Pagans.
Why the Journal's Boad limits some to very short responses is unknown as the Journal does not respond to inquiries about the matter.

Next week should be very interesting, as Congress wrestles with the auto industry bail-out possibilities.
Obama and the Dems are chomping at the bit to pass this bill asap to help the UAW stay solvent with their bennie issues. The Dems owe the UAW big-time for their $$(millions) and support in the last elections. Boulder in their path is that GW is still the Pres until late January, as well as the changing of Congress. GW and Co. are in no mood to go out of their way to save the UAW.
GM/Ford/Chrysler execs prefer filing Chapter 11, to kill quite a few expensive contracts/obligations as a judge would then control the re-organization(which is the last thing the UAW wants--they want to continue "business as usual").
My guess is that the spineless pseudo-Republicans will also cave in on this issue for a quick passage, further spending billions more of YOUR $$ with little guarantees or obligation for responsible operation and payback. Will GW have the gonads to veto this?

Jonathan over there you never know what will get posted and what won't. Sometimes your post gets thru many times they don't, gets frustrating if you take the time to write a long one and it won't allow you to post it. Then you are no longer allowed to edit you posts if you make a mistake either.
