It is time to start living within our means.

There has been much discussion about the forthcoming City budget crunch. This Tuesday evening, our City Council will have an opportunity to take the first small step to put some ACTION behind their words of warning.

Our so-called “gateway”, while austere, is completely adequate for a financially struggling city. It is time for Council to vote NO, and save $70,000.00 ($14,000 for the taxpayers of Middletown and $56,000 more for the taxpayers of Middletown and the rest of Ohio) by rejecting the frivolous and unnecessary “enhancements” to our “gateway” (actually nothing more than a highway interchange) and to our existing “welcome” sign!!!

After all, how many ways can we say “welcome”???

How critical can our financial problems be if Council sees fit to waste this money???

$ 70,000 gateway to what ? Demolition ? Section 8 housing ? A ghost town ? Poverty ? Drug dealing and prostitution ? These are things Middeltown is now known for so they want a gateway to all this ?

Maybe a nice statue of a drug dealer as the local landmark gateway or a hooker standing under a street light with a big welcome sign at it's base.
No more democrats no more republicans, vote Constitution Party !!

Are you sure that the $56,000 will actually be a savings to anyone and not just be used in another Ohio community?

Drive up and down I-75 and you will see that it indeed would.

Monroe interchange, new Austin Rd. Union Centre. If not Middletown then it will go to another community.

So what is your point???
Are you saying that we should WASTE it just so no other community gets a chance to USE it???  At least the $14,000 will be a savings to OUR community, and a slight relief to our beleaguered budget!!!

I am not talking about "Keeping up with the Joneses" here (or maybe I am?).  I am talking about WASTING money that we can ill-afford to waste with our already strained budget which is forecast to get tighter and tighter in the years ahead!!!

We MUST begin to live within our means and we must begin to do so now.  Use whatever fancy terms that you like to describe it, but this is a HIGHWAY INTERCHANGE, and nothing more!!!  It does not really need "enhancements".  It needs to be functional, and it will be without this extra BS.  And our existing "Welcome" sign is perfectly lovely and says it all: "Welcome to Middletown"!!!

Remember, we won't really be getting all that many NEW visitors, since Council and City Hall are ASHAMED of our businesses and have made it ILLEGAL for them to advertise themselves to passers-by on I-75.

Also remember that we cannot afford to even tend a flower bed or two at our HISTORIC cemetery, so we will NOT be able to tend these "enhancements" to our "gateway".  Why waste our scarce funds constructing them, just to have them go to seed and make our "gateway" look even worse???

EXACTLY, Ranger!!!

Public safety and infrastructure are the primary purposes of municipal government!!!

I cannot understand these folks that want to waste tax money on everything BUT these two items.  They always want to spends big wads of other people's money on superficial items, symbolism, and their own favorite HOBBIES.  Then, when push comes to shove and essential services such as police and fire must be cut, they all campaign for tax hikes "for public safety" which funds they promptly raid for more superficial items, symbolism, and their own favorite HOBBIES!!!

Ideology.  We get plenty of that on this blog.  I prefer practicality.  The reality is that we are all paying taxes. Another reality is that the $50k+ of state money is going to be used by some community.  In light of that, it is a practical consideration to think about taking advantage of this funding mechanism and kicking in $14,000.  This small investment should easily be recouped by the added development that may occur if our exit has an attractive look to it and something distinctive.  It may provide a new way for out of towners to think of Middletown.  Instead of "Steel, hookers, Section 8" people may also think "cool interchange" or "things are looking better in M'town".  An attractive gateway project that may cause a few drivers to warm up to our interchange and maybe even stop by is a good investment.

Neil, I think you get plenty of dissent and practical feedback on this blog. I have your address and phone number down there in Asheville, and as I know you are actually using Neil's name to post these apathemies regarding city hall, next post will have Neil's address and number. so all can call and see how Judy is enjoying the mountains, and that a city employee probably in ED is using his "identity."

I digress. The exit off Middletown is anything but scenic, indeed, its quite dangerous, terrible wreck under the underpass last week, and by no surpise, is frequented by homeless with signs which state such and ask for money. That's on the north and south bound exits. So that $14,000 of Bern's investment is really going to "polish" the brand awareness of Middletown? The levity on here but such idealogues and clueless city hall pundits helps one get through the hard times we face daily Neil.  But, I will give you this; you undoubtedly are associated with ED, as your post about "might" and other speculation, in contrast to fact and absolutes, is exactly how ED operates. The only reason anyone other than a resident or a truck hauling AK coils would get off the Middletown exit would be to grad a dinner or lunch at Bob Evans, Cracker Barrel, or O'Charley's.

If I may enlighten you Neil, I'll tell you how "outsiders" view Middletown. Corrupt, behind, unwilling to maintain its infrastructure, and one of the worst eyesores in the state. But, perhaps you are right, throw in a row of birch trees, maybe some boxwoods, and they'll venture down as far as K Mart before turning around while saying to themselves"," gee, we just stepped back into the sixties, did you see those street lights honey?" I love the DC cherry blossoms, perhaps some cherries this year Neil, or steel Magnolia's?

The usual well-worn complaints about town's appearance isn't the point, nor is saying it would be $14k of shrubs.  We're talking about bang for the buck -- $14k to get $70k worth of curb appeal, whether it be a fountain or whatever.  I doubt it would be a few trees from Bern's.

Got it. As long as the $$$ come from any source other than Middletown, lets waste the money because it doesn't have to be paid off. Curb appeal? That's amusing. Well, how about a gold plated traffic camera light "Neil" which states" Welcome to Middletown, home of the school district lagging behind the other cities, taxes are higher, and we have the highest water rates in southwestern Ohio. And, we don't provide any services to residents, but do waive water tap in rates. But because we have let the city rot, man can you get a deal on a house at prices that go back 30 years. Brilliant! Now that's curb appeal that brings them in.

You may have something else in mind---welcome to the state capital of section 8?
