Why hasn’t the Council Workbook been uploaded to the city web page yet?

Well, consider what’s on the agenda:

Accelerated [gas] Main Replacement Program Update

Continuation of Discussion on [raising] Water & Sewer User Fees

Pioneer Cemetery Discussion

Historic Preservation

Resolution endorsing the creation of a Main Street Program for downtown Middletown

Five resolution to make adjustments to appropriations for current expenses and other expenditures

Perhaps they don’t want us evil, nasty mere citizens asking questions and otherwise “interfering” with the wishes and dreams of the city’s elite.

Thinking back to the soiree at the Middletown Art Center Thursday, what they said:

  1. “It’s incremental.”
  2. “We have to work together.”
  3. "It’s just the start…we have to start somewhere.”

What I heard:

  1. “We’re going to shove our agenda down your throats a little at a time, so you don’t realize what’s happening.”
  2. “You’re going to have to do things our way.”
  3. “This is just the start…we’ll get everything we want, and everyone else will pay for it, just like with OUR new art center!!”

Perhaps some of the things on the agenda Tuesday, like “ Historic Preservation” and the “Main Street Plan” are the next “increments” that “we have to work together” on???

Sure will be nice to have that new shoe store, though.

Mr. Presta, you seem like an honest, if bitter person. All kidding aside, has anyone ever offered a realistic plan for the downtown? I mean has there actually been something tangible presented to the city that they denied? I really don't know.

Yes, Perry Thatcher once proposed a plan that involved a great deal of private investment.  The council sitting at that time shot it down in favor of a tapayer-funded  plan of their own very much like the "Main Street Plan".  That "Crossroads 2000" plan has been in place for ten years now, at a cost of over $13 MILLION of tapayer funds, and has failed miserably (and has been re-financed at least, I think twice. Your children will finish paying for it IF they can find a job in this town).  We have bell towers, clock towers, gateways, and water features.

No one knows whether or not any other "plans" have been proposed.  City councils and administrations like to keep such things very quiet and discourage them at their inception.  The planning department has actively discouraged any investors whose "plan" has not included the same old failed model of arts, crafts, and history with clock towers, water features and gateways.  Sybolism is always preferred over substance.

Mr. Ms.  Storm Ahead:

You state that I may "seem bitter".  That might be your opinion and you are entitled to it, but I trust that I do not sound "insane"!!!

One definition of insanity is to "keep trying the same thing over and over, while expecting a different result."

We have already heard from the Downtown Mater Plan Committee.  They want to try the same thing over again.  I would have preferred to have had "bitter people" on that committee

This coming Tuesday, our City Council will be considering the "Main Street Plan".  It will be interesting to see who votes "YES".

No sir! You do NOT sound insane! I'm not judging anyone. We all have had our experiences in life. I have heard that Middletown is not business friendly, but do not hear business people publicly say this. Does the press know stuff they don't report? I totally agree that private sector investment is the correct thing. I don't WANT my children paying for stuff done now, when they're 40 years old!

Everyone is concerned with how much our kids and grandkids will be paying for our "runaway spending" (notice how this terrible spending has only occurred on Obama's watch) yet these are the same folks who don't want to feel any pain to get our country out of trouble -- "do not touch my Social Security and Medicare even if those programs are unsustainable, don't raise my taxes, and for God's sake don't decrease the bloated defense budget.  And long live Sarah Palin."  For people that are supposedly for fiscal responsibility, as they always vote for GOP, this is a head scratcher.

Bill - It doesn't matter which party is in control,as I've said before both parties are nearly identical in their tyrannical thinking. I do agree Obama has thrown money to the wealthy like it grows on tree's,sad that the very people he is suppose to save never get's a dime of it. People have to stop voting along party lines, two parties have run this country into the ground and it's funny how people just keep on voting the same ole way. And America will never ever recover. Being the pessimist I am it's over for the America we once knew.

The two party system does create a zero sum game -- for me to "win" you have to lose.  So all common sense solutions and hybrid proposals that bring together the best of different ideas get flushed away in laughter as the political operatives would rather create a shadow game of political football, name calling, etc.  There are some ideas from both sides of the aisle that I would like to see developed more fully and discussed but it gets lost in all the game-playing.

Bill,

This observation is spot on! America’s biggest problem is that our legislators are no longer “citizen legislators” with our country’s best interests at heart. Our legislators are “politicians” whose foremost goal is getting reelected, and whose every move is based on that goal, with the secondary goal of moving up the political food chain. Of course, the only way they can move up the political food chain is for their party to be in power, so only when their own individual reelection is at stake will they buck their party.

It does not matter to them what is right or wrong, or what is best for our nation or its people. Such matters are the least of their concerns.

This must change. America cannot continue down this path.

Two of the items on the agenda for tonight’s council meeting are:

The City Manager’s report on Historic Preservation

Resolution endorsing the creation of a Main Street Program for downtown Middletown

These two items have the ability to be the final nails in the coffin of “Downtown” Middletown.

The area known as “Downtown Middletown” was so described because it once fit the definition of “the business and commerce center of a city”. For many years now, our city officials have been doing everything in their powers to exclude business and commerce from ever again thriving in this area. They have forsaken business and commerce for the sake of the arts, crafts, antiques, and a type of “faux preservation” and phony restoration of fractured history the way they wish it was (as opposed to the way it actually occurred).

Instead of trying to maintain, cultivate and restore a healthy climate for business and commerce, they have chosen to squander the public treasure in an effort to create an "arts district" combined with a quaint Currier & Ives type of Dickensian postcard “village center”. They have consistently and miserably failed.

Tonight they will begin the second phase of their “incremental” efforts to indoctrinate council to force the hardworking taxpayers to foot the bill for the hobbies of the wannabe elite of our city.

Neither “Historic Restoration” to make Middletown seem to be something that it is not, and never has been, nor the “Downtown Plan” which will help to preclude any business or commerce that city officials cannot find a way to block on their own, will benefit more than a very few residents of the City of Middletown.

For far too long already, a few “bad actors” at city hall along with the city’s wannabe elite have been fighting to keep business OUT of the former downtown area, and using the taxpayers’ own money to do so.

Council and the administration should concentrate on how to use our money to keep our city safe and repair our crumbling infrastructure instead of finagling ways to spend our scarce dollars on the fun and games that the elite want, but cannot afford to provide for themselves.
