OK MUSA- Time to have an opportunity to meet Verdin and the rest of the Pendleton Arts people on Sept 2 from 4PM to 7PM at 130 N. Verity. They will entertain questions from community members as they want to "meet the people who live here"! Come with your questions and watch as they put all our fears to rest providing answers to "how many jobs do you think this will create?" What types of jobs do you see being created?" "What do you think these jobs will pay that are attracted to your arts center?" "How much traffic volume do you anticipate seeing downtown on any given night?" Never know- People on this site like Hermes and Mike Presta may get to rub elbows with the big doggies and important city leaders as they sip wine and eat crumpets while engaging in some meaningful conversation that only Hermes could understand. Ready to share a glass with Kohler, Gilleland, Robinette, Verdin or one of the artzy supporters from the council meeting Hermes? Should we have an interpreter to help us heathens understand the cultured folks? Just kidding now, anti-MUSA people. Don't get all bunged with that stick up your keester.

I shall make an attempt to attend this gala,I look forward to meeting many of the acclaimed artist as well as Mr. Verdin himself. I shall ask questions but only what I believe shall pertain to the functions of the art center itself. I feel it will be a jolly good time with all the attendees and I shall stifle myself until the event. It is not good for the health to be excited prior to such an event.
Mr. Vet,you may accompany me to the event but I ask that you remain a gentleman at all times. I wince at the thought of you not attending as you are one of the corner stones of our society. I look forward to the chance of being in attendance to witness such a spectacular gathering of the social elite.

Pip pip and cheerio, my good man Hermes. Shall we take a bottle of wine to this illustrious partaking? Perhaps an aged bottle of Ripple, or would you prefer the oldest white box with the word "WINE" on it from the local drive-thru to mark the occasion, my good man? Perhaps Presta can bring the Velveeta or string cheese and crackers along with him. What say you, Master Presta, distinguished gentleman from the northern suburbia Prestas? Randall Esquire, be ready to attend looking your best from the upscale, designer Wal-Mart collection. Remember, only the best will do for this occasion. We want to look our best while representing the rest of the MUSA participants.
Dare I say that this event has already been tarnished? One of us has posted on the Journal and been called a jerk (by one of our friends from the arts community no doubt). And here we were attempting to be as graceful and courteous as we could be too. How dastardly of that coward who name-called. |

Yes Mr. Vet we really should take along a fine wine such as you mention. I believe it would be most considerate of us to share with everyone our finest find. Surely you jest by suggesting a boxed wine ! I believe a more appropriate drink for such an autistic occasion calls for at least a plastic bottle of wine. I think that would be most impressive don't you ?
I agree someone should bring the crackers, perhaps Randal or Michael could be persuaded to supply us. And I might add a fresh roll of salami or bologna could also be for a treat ! They go great with the crackers. I believe Velvetta could be a bit much, after all this isn't an event the queen mum would attend. Although I would be delighted with her presence !

Gee, guys, I'll have to discuss the matter with my social secretary to see if my schedule is open. I might have a previous engagement at the doggie park in West Chester. Here's a thought: Given the heart-warming story told by Mr. Verdin about the $600,000 objet d'art sculpted by the famous NY artist from scrap laying around his bell works, do you think a representative from Cohen Bros. will be there selling "art supplies"??? |

Mercy! We here on MUSA are taking a beating over on the Middletown Journal story on this. The pro Pendleton people are out in force and hammering our already tattered reputation as no-shows and promises never kept. It's enough to make one . Of course, someone from MUSA is helping it along baiting them, trying to raise the old blood pressure a few notches. Looks like, by the responses, they are rather easy to rile tonight. Give it a try if you're bored. Perhaps the antagonist enjoys this type of behavior. Shameful.
So, Hermes, the Velveeta is totally out of the question? How about some sardines in mustard with some beer in the white cans from the bargain bin to go along with that bologna and crackers? Would they resent us for bringing that? I guess beer belching is totally out of the question at this gala. Do you think we could help them out with the arts theme by donating a velvet Elvis painting won years ago from LeSourdsville Lake? How about the dogs playing poker picture, an artistic classic! Just kidding....... _popupControl(); |

My wife threw out my poker-playing dogs on velvet several years ago. It was the extra large over-the-sofa size, original by a noted Tiajuana artist, too!!! It added a wonderful touch back in the days when I used to keep a craps table in my living room.

I just came back from having a look over there at The Journal story, and if the pro-Pendleton posters (actually, they seem to be all the same juvenile-acting individual who holds a political plum position--paid for by the taxpayers!) are representative of the class of people who might be in attendance, I am unsure that we should honor them with our presence!!!
We are probably too HIGH CLASS to hob knob with them!!! I'd much rather have a cold beer (or three) and a hamburger with some real citizens who have the best interests of Middletown at heart, and do it somewhere that may actually pay some taxes into the city treasury!!!

Given the limited success in these two locations, is the booming ecconomic development anticipated for Middletown actually a reasonable expectation??? I don't know, but apparently there are only a very few Middletonians who are doubtful if one is to believe the Journal posters and the Citizens' Comments at the last Council meeting or the City officials themselves.
Did our city officials take the time to inquire of the Ashland or Rising Sun city officials about the tax receipts resultant from the Pendleton Centers there prior to plunking down our scarce tax dollars, or did they just "take it on faith" from Professor Harold "Verdin" Hill that this "boys' band" was just the ticket to cure our "River City" trouble, trouble, trouble???
Did anyone even ask Verdin who occupies the "condos" in Rising Sun that moved so quickly? Were they artists or art lovers, or could they possibly have been CASINO employees tired of the long commutes from Cincinnati, Louisville, Indianapolis, and Lexington???
The last I looked, Middletown doesn't have a casino. In fact, our city officials did everything possible to keep a casino OUT of their preferred location in Middletown.

Mike- just got done reading some of the posts from the artzy defenders over on the Journal site. I find it ironic when they challenge the MUSA people to present any evidence of accomplishment for the community when all they have done so far is show up at a frickin' council meeting to give testimony about how "wonderful" this arts center will be for the development of the downtown. They (nor anyone else) don't have a clue how all of this will turn out. Apparently to them, it's all an emotional trip of support for this crap with no tangible evidence of success presented nor any requirements/ city protection from Verdin necessary. It is amazing that some of these artsy people need no assurance what-so-ever from Verdin on any commitment of success using their tax dollars. Not logical.

Exactly, Vet.
Just like all of the local yokels in "The Music Man", they fell under the spell of this Professor Hill because they "want to believe", and they are certain that we will have "the best boys' band this side of Chicago"!!!
Yet, they asked no questions, did no investigation, and really have no idea of what a REASONABLE expection of tangible results might be. They fell hook, line, and sinker that all of the other artsy stuff in Cincinnati is the result of PAC, when actually PAC's success is the result of all the artsy stuff that was there BEFORE him!!!
It didn't really take much investigation to figure that out, but apparently too much for our city officials.

I dunno--seems like a nice and appropriate gesture from Mr.Verdin/Pendleton.
Let's don't misplace our frustration and displeasure.
You can't fault Mr.Verdin for grabbing this deal. Anyone would be delusional not to accept those terms.
After listening to Mr.V ramble on at the Council meeting(would our Mayor have let anyone else speak so broadly for so long?), I decided that he is the only redeeming hope in this project. The 26 mumbling "pro project" speakers gave little reason and have produced nothing significant in the area so far. Simply shills addicted to the public dole, hoping to remain in favor for their next life support bailout.
ED/Mr.Robinette authored this taxpayer/"downtown" raping, with Admin approval.
Council couldn't endorse it fast enough, despite knowing the fundamental precedent and area evaluation message..
Council/Admin is ready to turn over Hook Field to this same ED Dept.?
A ploy to get at the airport funds to strengthen a rumored depleted ED Dept.funding?
Haven't Mr.Bevis and Co. done well enough in transforming Hook?
By approving the property giveaway the way that it was structured, Council/Admin has officially determined that all property in that immediate area is totally worthless. Anyone thinking of buying in down there must now be having serious second thoughts. Beau Verre now knows that their building is worth basically nothing. 56 Degrees is worth nothing. The medicine/soda shop is worth nothing. Main St. is worth nothing. The Manchester Inn is worth nothing. Many others are worth far less than zero.
We should have plenty of others knocking on the door for a similar package. Council has lost all public confidence at this time. They need changed out at the eariest opportunity, along with a few positions in the bunker. Our newer members all let us hang when it truly mattered.
Sad day.
The tide has turned, and now the discourse here at MUSA has become more important.
So--be careful what you say and how it is said.
We can make huge strides at this time by being positive in OUR direction, along with innovative and intelligent. thinking, even though we'uns ain't all that brilliant either.
The MJ discussions are mush.
The posters here seem knowledgeable, experienced locally and creative.
OK--let's turn up the heat and ?s in all of the right ways.
The community we could save may well be our own.
Notice is up that applications are being taken for next year's boards and committees appointments.
I sense a new concept of inclusion, and many from this site could end up being very well-placed.
Time to get MORE involved!

Anybody see this video yet? I love it how Channel 2 closes the report with 3 different people that would never be cool enough to toast the arts with plastic cups. I was wondering... who gets the contracting job of renovating the new PAC? It wouldn't be the glass shop owners and all their woodwork removed from school buildings, would it? |

Is everyone ready to attend this from 4PM to 7? Got your questions ready for Verdin and his people? Would be interesting to see his reaction to some direct questions about his plans to develop this and the types and pay of the residual jobs that this venture is suppose to create. I'd like to see him and his artistic pals in action while being asked some blunt questions. Anyone going tonight?
As VietVet mentioned- don't forget to bring the appetizers and the Ripple Hermes. Show 'em MUSA does not come empty-handed to these upscale shindigs! Mr. Presta, would you be willing to forego those beers and burgers for one night and join us in the land of milk and honey? Spider and others- are you able to attend? Let's be on our best behavior. No belching or other disgusting sounds please. We want to make a good impression, especially for our detractors over on the Journal site. We want to be there and show some class around the many esteemed citizens that will be in attendance, right?

Do you really want to honor these folks with our presence???
Why should a true art lover like myself want to associate with such juvenile poseurs, especially if they get their hands on some free alcohol??? It could even get dangerous. Who knows how these low-class freak-a-zoids that use handles such as Hugh Jorgan, Lou Sanus, Eric Shun, and Hugh Jaynis may react in person after they swill down a few mouthfuls of free cheap wine, especially if they hear some “inconvenient truths” that shatter their pleasant myths???

Well, I DID decide to stop in at the MAC for a while. The only other regulars from this forum that I saw were What a City and VietVet. (This is NOT to say that others were not there. I do NOT know the identities of all posters, and I was not there for the entire time--only for a while between 5 and 6 pm.)
More later on my experience and observations...if I have time and am so inclined. Now I am off for a gyro and a beer or two,
PS: A large thank you to the unidentified kind lady who pulled up next to me at the stop light at Grand & Breiel and informed me that my left brake lamp was out!!! I took care of it immediately and am once again completely in compliance with the vehicle code.

Why does the video say something like "re-establish" Middletown as an art center in South Western Ohio.
When was Middletown ever an "art mecca", and why did they say the stain class business is the oldest in the country? ??? |

The owners of the local glass studio bought the leftovers of an older company that wasn't really even in business anymore. At least barely in business. They got all of their inventory and the name of the business, which was called Riordan. Technically the original glass company is long gone and the company owned in Middletown added the other company's name to theirs so they can now claim they are the oldest stained glass company in the United States. Some might say that's a bit misleading, but businesses do that all the time when they merge or buy another company's assets.

What would you estimate as to the numbers there Mike? Maybe 70 or so? Only ones I recognized were you and Mr. Wood, but then I didn't stay long enough to get a good look at the folks that were there. I would have thought that they would have had an arts supporter or two manning the door to "meet and greet" the community members as the story yesterday stated that the purpose of this event was to talk to the community. When I walked in, it had the feel of exclusion for anyone but the usual crowd. Any city officials there? Didn't see any.

Well…this certainly is turning into an interesting state of affairs. Interesting, but also a little confusing. I am sure that many people, myself included, have their own take on the entire subject, and those takes probably vary widely. Since all that most of you have to go on is probably The Journal’s version of the latest event in this saga, I thought I that I might add my first-hand narrative of my experience at the Middletown Art Center last evening, and how it might differ with The Journal’s version. While I will strive to be as objective as possible, please bear in mind that is the way I saw things. First, The Journal story stated that “about 200 people attended”. I think that is entirely possible and should be easily verifiable, should anyone care to do so as there was a sign-in book near the entrance. I made no attempt to “count heads“, but while I was there I can say that between 30-40 people were “mingling” in the entry foyer (which seemed to be the “reception area”). Another four to six people were browsing in the “Exhibition Hall” at any one time during my stay where a host of works by Velma J. Morris were being displayed. I was “greeted” (after I walked over towards him) by a well-known local figure who introduced me to Mr. Verdin as a “civic activist and rabble-rouser”. Since I doubted that he knew the true meaning of the term “rabble-rouser”, I did not take offense and considered it an attempt at a good-natured ice-breaker. Mr. Verdin excused himself immediately after shaking hands, as he seemed to see someone across the room with whom he had an urgent need to speak. I was warmly received by Ms. Cathy Mulligan. Her husband (Larry, the former head of the water department, NOT Lawrence P. Mulligan, Jr., the Mayor) also said a few words. Apparently, I was either too late or too early for the part where area residents were “allowed a chance to learn more about PAC”. The few comments that I did hear about PAC-Middletown and the taxpayers’ investment???
If I started to bring up facts or figures, these three statements were just repeated, so I politely smiled, nodded my head, and did not press any issues. I went back three times to the Exhibition Hall to view some of the race horse works by Ms. Morris, and actually was quite taken with her colored pencil work “Angel With a Harp”. I might even have considered a purchase had the artist been there, even though my wife warned me that we should be supporting the two artists in our own family now. Bottom line??? (And this may not be completely objective!!) Most of the people there seemed to be more interested in the free wine and hors d'oeuvres than in discussing art or PAC-Middletown and its economic impact on Middletown. PS to Hermes: I di NOT arrive empty handed!!! I brought my own before-breakfast beverage of choice, a frost litre (<-- notice the sophisticated, artsy, "continental" spelling ) of Diet Pepsi to sip -- out of the plastic bottle-!! PPS: I also made it a point to wear shorts and sandals. At the last council meeting, which was held an hour earlier than scheduled, I overheard some of the "artsy" set ridiculing and snickering at the guy who wore shorts and sandals to a council meeting. One would think such sophisticated aristocrats would be better mannered!! |

I was unable to attend last nights party at Pendleton, which saddens me, I had a case of Bush Light ready to go. It was in the bottles and thats about as classy as I can get I have read the journal article and comments from my buddies that did show up. If and I a mean IF 200 people showed up to show support for this then thats great. I truly hope this project is a huge success. I just dont feel that it will be. The question I have is what will happen with and if this does fail? All those people that came to council and said how much this will impact the downtown nd bring life back to our city. Will they then come back and say sorry we were wrong and will they give me back my tax money spent on this? NO!!! They will blame the failure on all of us for not being more supportive from the start.
Mike, dont let those comments made about your attire get to you, which I know you wont. These artsy folks will be eating there words soon enough.

Mike- sounds like the abruptness of Verdin's departure after you were introduced could be taken two ways:
1. He felt he didn't have time for you as he had more important people to talk to.......OR.....
2. He knew from your opposition at the council meeting, with him in attendance, that you were seen as the "enemy" of this project and perhaps resented being introduced to you and as a result, had no time for you in a discussion one on one.
Either way, it was rude, particularly on the part of a person who is trying to portray themselves as being a "cultured individual". If that is an example of the way these artsy people are going to act, no wonder we make fun of them and resent their very being. Same goes with any of Verdin's supporters that choose to act in a snooty fashion. To hell with them if that's their position on this.
Bottom line- this was advertised by the Journal as a "meet and greet" for the community and open to the public. It didn't appear that this happened at all, rather, another exclusionary episode of the small number or snobs ignoring the general public and then, having the audacity to raid the public funds to make this potential fiasco happen.
Randy- IMO, if this fails, the first ones to hear about it will be city council ( just like Anita Scott- Jones said- she will hear about it) because THEY are responsible for the funding and cowering down to this small band of elitists. I can't say as I blame Verdin or his little band of artsy gypsies for putting out this propaganda program of downtown empire building. More power to them. Just frustrating to see the city leaders not protecting the people's money on such a risky venture. That's the initial issue with the secondary issue being learning a lesson not the do it again. JMO

There is also a "cafe" open five days a week from 9 am to 3 pm (no breakfast or dinner) plus the one evening per month for the "First Friday" event.
PAC-Rising Sun (a small town with THOUSANDS of cash-laden out-of-town visitors daily due to the two CASINOS located there) also has only 19 "artists", but no cafe.
