Frank Frisch's article about the condition of the Canal Museum and the Hydraulic Canal paints a sad picture, not unlike the condition of parts of Middletown. He mentions the rusted spike on the old pump handle, the trash, including old tires and 55 gallon drums by the hydraulic, the bugs inside and outside the museum and the general poor condition of the building. Sad.

How about placing the Canal Museum responsibility with the Parks Committee since the Parks Department has been reduced? How about calling the churches to volunteer to pick up the trash, fix the safety hazard on the pump, remove the 55 gallon drums and clean/repair the museum? Didn't one church volunteer to help people in the community in fixing up their property recently? How about calling the cub/boy scouts to earn some badges for community service to help on this? How about calling a community work session like Bulls Run does and getting the Bulls Run people to oversee this? Other options?

Just something to talk about on an otherwise, slow news day, right?

It really is a shame.  This is how the powers to be care about the history of Middletown.  I wonder if they will want to tear this down just like the vault at the Pioneer Cemetary.  There needs to be more pride in Middletown and it needs to start at the top.

Powers that be what the hell do they care.  Most have no stake in the city, most of the people making the decisions live outside of the city.  No skin off their nose when they GO home at 6:00PM to Mason or West Chester, or where ever they may live.  The running of the city has been outsourced to basically non-residents.

I have never lived in a city so willing to throw away it's history.

Ah, don't paint your gutters and see how quick they come after you.  The city is so hypocritical.

Vet, I am confused. I thought Ann Mort and Adianne Shearer were taking brroms and Murphy's soap to the city, and inviting Forbes back to see "the best damn clean town named on the fastes dying city list in the country." Are you telling me this was a project that escaped them? I am shocked!

Were they not already on Project 337 a year ago marked COMPLETED?

Why not place the responsibility for the Canal Museum squarely where it belongs???

Right on the shoulders of "Mr. History" himself, Sammie the History and Landmarks Commissioner!!!

it's my understanding the Middletown Historical Society owns and operates the Canal Museum, not the city.

Well then the city should send out the citations to the Midd Historical Society.  They want everyone with no money to fix their property to city management standards - then the historical society should have the treatment.  Or would there be special treatment because of certain current and past members being friend of city officials.
You how it happens - if you are a friend of city management - you get free work done for you at your home.

George Crout donated some money to the Canal Museum when he died for the maintenance of the building, didn't he? I know that the museum was a pet project for Mr. Crout. Since his death, his successors haven't lived up to his enthusiasm for the history of the town, have they? Does the Historical Society get it's funds from city hall, or do they have to rely on donations and fundraisers?

Ok, Sammie Ashworth.....what's the story on the condition of this area? It's looking bad and it falls in your area of responsibility apparently.

The Middletown Historical Society owns the Canal Museum and the Pickwick Building on Main Street. Both properties need repairs inside and out.

Bob Wilson is the current president of the Historical Society.
