Nelson you are geing a bit obsessive on the matter of these employees.  Employess have been laid off by the 100's if not thousands in Middletown and by the Millions across the county.  Middletown was over due and hung on to all of their employees until the end.  There will most likely be more before it is over.  Relying on federal Funds to pay your employees, hoping you will get funding is not a good way to run a City, as Middletown is finding out.

Wasteful - lets really think about it.  The individuals Nelson is speaking of were paid by govt funds not city funds.  So laying these individuals off really did not help the city at all.  So if we are receiving more money would it not make sense to keep these individuals rather then start from fresh with new employees.  Not to mention if they hire new people does it not look like there might have been an motive in why certain people lost their jobs when others that had less experience did not.

Even if the city gets the extra NSP funds, it is a 1x thing.  The money will be a temporary fix for these individuals but next year, the funding won't be there and we'll be right back where we are today-it will just delay the inevitable..There's not enough money to justify keeping these people.  Middletown is trying to be somewhat financially responsible and cut their costs instead of relying on money they aren't even sure they are going to receive yet!  It's an unfortunate reality but city governments everywhere are cutting employees..

This funding is and has been there for 30+ years.  But let's say it's a one time deal, since the announcement of layoffs 1 employee received a raise (Mr. Adkins) another received a promotion and raise (Mr. Fuchs) and a new position created (for Mr. Huiet) all funded under these same funds.

My prayer for 2010 is that all of the citizens of Middletown will soon have transparent, accountable local government.
