Can someone explain to me how the football rankings used for the playoffs work? How can the Middies have one loss, yet fall all the way to #11 just above a Northmont team that is 5-4?
It's not like they lost to a bad team...Colrain moved up to 7th.
This seemd worse than the BCS...
Is there any way for them to get back into the playoff picture if they win their last game at Princeton?

I think it has something to do with the ranking of the teams we beat and the teams that beat us. See if you can figure it out:
COLUMBUS, Ohio - As a direct request from the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association Tournament Committee, and approved by the OHSAA Board of Directors, a new divisor is used to determine second level points that is based on the number of games that opponents have played to date. For each open date that an opponent has had to date, a smaller divisor is used to calculate second level points. Before any games are played, the computer assumes that the opponents on each school's schedule will play a full complement of games and assigns the divisor of 100 (10 weeks times 10 opponents = 100). After each week of the season, for each open date that occurs for an opponent that a school has played to date, the computer subtracts the divisor by one. In other words, if week five has just been completed and all five of a school's opponents have played a full complement of games, then the divisor remains at 100, and second level points are divided by 100. If one opponent on a school's schedule to date has had an open date, then the divisor reduces by one to 99, and second level points are divided by 99. If two opponents on a school's schedule to date have had an open date, then the divisor reduces by two to 98, and second level points are divided by 98, and so on. The second level points are then multiplied by the factor 10 in order to move the decimal point higher so that the averages are comparable to those in past years. First and second level point averages are then added together for an average total. The following is an example of how the points are awarded and how to read the OHSAA Computer Rankings:
For more information, please view the OHSAA football tournament regulations.
First level points - 15.0 points {3 wins times 5.0 points (for defeating Division III opponents)} divided by 3 (the number of games Team A has played thus far) = 5.0000 first level points. Second level points - 10.0 from Opponent 1 {2 wins times 5.0 (for defeating Division III opponents)}, 10.0 from Opponent 2 {2 wins times 5.0 (for defeating Division III opponents)} and 5.0 from Opponent 3 {1 win times 5.0 (for defeating a Division III opponent)} for 25.0 points. These 25 points are then divided by 99 (since Opponent 3 thus far has had an open date) and multiplied by 10 = 2.5253 second level points. Total Points: 5.0000 (first level points) plus 2.5253 (second level points) = 7.5253 NOTE: Say during week four, Opponent 1 has an open date. Then the second level points divisor for Team A after week four becomes 98, since Opponent 3 has had one open date and now Opponent 1 has had one open date.

Don't count the Middies out yet folks. They need to beat Princeton pure and simple. Then they need a little help. I have not done the math but here is the skinny:
Withrow plays Aiken. Aiken is terrible so a win does not help Withrow too much, no way Aiken beats them. Centerville plays Fairmont. Fairmont is a decent team so a win for Centerville could push them up. This could be a problem for Middies. Lebanon playes a very bad Miamisburg team that they will kill. So in the end it looks like we are not out of it totally. If Fairmont could beat Centerville I guess it is possible, they are big rivals so you never know. I just don't know if we can push into 8th place with a win even if that happens. Having 5 teams all with 19.xxxx is amazing though but certainly silly, 4 decimal places? Are we building a new space shuttle here? All we can do is beat Princeton and see how it comes out. |

Ok, did a little research and stumbled upon this:
If Fairfield beats Hamilton Friday night and then we beat Princeton Saturday, I believe the Middies are in. But don't hold me to that, all from the internet chat boards. Fairfield is playing great right now and the Big Blue are crawling towards the end of the season. There is hope folks. |

The biggest issue is that the GMC teams that Middletown has played have not done well and their out of conference wins have gotten them little to no points. If they do not make the playoffs they can look at the Aiken game and the Lima game as being the issue. Aiken has zero wins and Lima has 2 wins - Middletown doesn't get very many points for beating weak teams like these two. |

Agree 100% sportsnut - I know Lima Senior used to be a rival and maybe that is why we still play them periodically. But Aiken, why? If either of those games had been against a mid level team we would be sitting pretty. But it has been a great year, it was fun to wear a Middie shirt into the Engles Corner Krogers and have several people say Go Middies. They deserve this so hopefully everything works out. I remember my junior year, 1983 I believe, came down to the last game of the year against Princeton to make the playoffs. We messed up a snap on a field goal attempt, they got the ball back and their ridiculously fast little QB ran an end around the length of the field. Man what an exciting game though. DD Howard got an interception that was just awesome but we still came up short. Does anyone remember that game? I think Princeton went on to win it all that season.

How far out do they schedule games? Can they put better non-conference teams on the schedule for next year? I hope they make the playoffs.
