The Learning Curve: How Education and the Economy are Reshaping the Heartland

Wednesday, December 10
6:30-8:00
Miami Middletown Downtown
4 North Main St.
Free parking behind the building

As the economy goes, so goes education. This is true across the nation, but how does the relationship between our schools and our economy impact us here in Middletown? Students in Miami University Joe Sampson's Journalism class spent months immersed in field research in Middletown examining questions of community identity and engagement through the lens of public education. Now, in partnership with the Miami-Whitewater Valley Public Media (MWVPM) coalition, Sampson's students are eager to present their findings to the Middletown community. How is this paper and steel mill community seeking a new identity, economy, and educational future?

Join us as Sampson's Journalism students present their finding in a multimedia community forum. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Student documentary examines Miami University's alcohol culture
The Oxford Press (OH) November 30, 2006
By Amanda Dennis

"...Miami faculty member Joe Sampson and his Advanced Electronic
Journalism class are bringing Miami's drinking culture to a different
venue - the classroom - in their documentary, 'Restoring Honor: A Campus
and Community Response.'"

"The documentary, which will be screened on Dec. 7 in Williams Hall,
focuses on how Miami's drinking culture affects not only students, but
every member of the Miami and Oxford communities."

"'What we're trying to say here is that there's a problem not unique to
Miami or Oxford, and how can we fix it,' Sampson said..."
