Middletown board approves superintendent negotiations

The Middletown City Schools District board of education unanimously approved entering into negotiations with the possible replacement to Greg Rasmussen.

 The board met in executive session Monday night and agreed to start negotiating with Sam Ison, the district’s senior director of instructional leadership, board president Marcia Andrew told The Journal.

She said the board felt it was important to “continue the momentum” Rasmussen created during his three years with the district. A few days ago, Rasmussen agreed to become a school superintendent in Andover, Kan.

Ison has been in Middletown for two years, and prior to that, served 12 years as principal at Lebanon High School, Andrew said. She said in six years, he took the district from continuous improvement rating to excellent and the district retained the rating for the next six years.

She said the board felt “great continuity was very important.”

She hopes the board can sign a contract with Ison so he can start as superintendent on July 1, the day after Rasmussen leaves.

Kinda fast on the old trigger aren't they? Almost like they had this planned ahead of time isn't it? Ison was a principal, but according to this article, has NO SUPERINTENDENT EXPERIENCE. Only been here two years. Ms. Andrew hopes he can start as super the day after Rasmussen leaves. What's the big hurry? Reason for not looking at what is out there in the experienced super ranks?

Taking Lebanon to an excellent rating and taking Middletown to excellent are two extremely different things. This is not an apples to apples comparison. Demographics, much stronger emphasis by parents on education in Lebanon, a greater percentage of upscale professionals in Lebanon, and expectations by parents in Lebanon as to performance and results are more strongly emphasized in Lebanon. Gotta know Ison recognizes the difference and the Middletown school people surely can't expect him to do the magic he did in Lebanon with the Middletown schools. Totally different situation, IMO.

Did Ison, as principal of Lebanon High School, take the district from CI to excellent in six years with a retention the next six years, or did the Lebanon Super do that? Didn't know a high school principal got credit for the overall district improvment. Usually falls on the super, doesn't it?
I'm so proud of my hometown and what it has become. Recall 'em all. Let's start over.

I like mr. Ison
Have limited experience working with him
He seems to mirror mr. Rasmussen's thinking and goals
They seemed to be a good team
Has experience in the system and from a system very close by
A natural choice who can step in immediately IMO
Maybe his current position can be eliminated for additional $$ savings

This is from an article when he was hired originally:

Ison has 32 years in the field of education in which he has been a teacher, principal and college instructor. His experiences have led to demonstrated success in leadership, communication, conflict resolution, and innovation.

Ison holds a Doctorate in Educational Administration from Miami University.


This might just be the best hiring yet!!

The school board is confident that Sam Ison is the right person to lead the district forward. He is a collaborative leader who has experience growing the capacity of instructional teams and building relationships. During the last year and a half as Senior Director of Instructional Leadership, he has helped shape and implement the work of the district on our three main goals: raising academic achievement through rich instructional practices, building a positive and collaborative climate, and carefully allocating our limited resources without impacting critical student programming. 

Thanks to the leadership of Greg Rasmussen and the dedication and hard work of the Middletown teachers and staff, the district is making progress towards our goals. We don't want to lose that momentum, and believe that Sam will provide needed continuity so that we as a district are not distracted from these efforts.  We anticipate that Greg and Sam will work together over the next three months so that the transition can be as smooth as possible.

We hope you will join us in congratulating and supporting Sam in his new role.
 
Note: The Journal just made a mistake on the quote about Ison's success at Lebanon High. The rating of the high school went from Continuous Improvement to Excellent in 6 years and then stayed there. I don't know what the rating of the whole district overall was at the time, and no, I would not give credit to the high school principal for that rating, whatever it was. And yes, there are obvious differences between Lebanon and Middletown. But no matter how you slice it, that it is major improvement in a very short period of time, that is evidence of superior leadership skills.

I hope Mr. Ison is the correct choice to improve the scores, indicators and the image of the schools. We shall see in a year or two. He has a tough job ahead of him.
I'm so proud of my hometown and what it has become. Recall 'em all. Let's start over.
