Bob Keller, who was a point guard on the 1946 Middletown High School state champion boys basketball team, died March 7 at age 83.
Keller and his teammates won the second of Middletown’s state-record seven championships in 1946.
The Middies also won state titles in 1944, ’47, ’52, ’53, ’56 and ’57.
“He was a very good mentor to myself and some of my friends,” said Mike Carter, who grew up learning to play basketball in the alley behind Keller’s The Alameda street home.
“He didn’t score a lot of points, but he was a master at defense, and he got the ball where it was supposed to be,” Carter recalled.
Keller also played four years of basketball at Otterbein College, where he met his wife, Miriam.
Carter, who was seven years younger than Keller, said he had lost touch with his friend until he moved to Columbus in 1972 and ran into Keller in Westerville.
