Op-Ed Contributor: Shifting America from sick care to genuine wellness
Washington, DC — With the Senate health committee convening daily to craft a comprehensive health reform bill, the basic outline of this landmark legislation is now clear.Yes, it will ensure access to affordable, quality care for every American. But, just as important, it will hold down health care costs by creating a sharp new emphasis on disease prevention and public health. We spend a staggering $2.3 trillion annually on health care – 16.5 percent of our GDP and far more than any other country spends on health care – yet the World Health Organization ranks U.S. health care only 37th among nations, on par with Serbia. We also have to realize that wellness and prevention must be truly comprehensive. It is not only about what goes on in a doctor’s office. It encompasses workplace wellness programs, community-wide wellness programs, building bike paths and walking trails, getting junk food out of our schools, making school breakfasts and lunches more nutritious, increasing the amount of physical activity our children get, and so much more. Winston Churchill famously said that “Americans always do the right thing – after they’ve tried everything else.” Well, we’ve tried everything else, and it has led us to bad health and the brink of bankruptcy.
Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) is a senior member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee and chairs the Senate panel that funds medical research and health care..

Question, just what kinds of diseases can a Chiropractor prevent that are so costly these days? Can you prevent Heart Disease, Type 2 Diabetes, Cancer, Alzheimer's, Kidney disease, etc.?

Wanna bet that he will be willing to SELL us some stuff that he CLAIMS will be able to prevent all of that stuff???
Actually, I am more concerned about about Senator Harkin's statement that: "And we are going to give our citizens access to a 21st century health care system – one that is focused on helping us to live healthy, active, happy lives."
In the first place, they will not be (and can never be) "GIVING" us ANYTHING!!!
They can only TAKE money FROM those of us that pay taxes; use about 40% for overhead, administration, and bureaucracy; and then distribute the remaining 60% (less what they manage to skim off the top) back to us in the form of FORCING things upon us that THEY think will make US "happy"--with most going to those who did NOT pay any tax in the first place!!!
I might also offer a wager that the VERY FIRST thing that our illustrious congress will do is to EXEMPT THEMSELVES from the dandy health care that they plan to FORCE on us!!
There is no way that I can live a more "active" life, so I guess that I will be dis-allowed any cardiac care under the new plan. I also wonder if folks like Christopher Dodd, Barney Frank, Gerald Nadler, and President Barack "Smokey" Obama will be forced...oops...I mean helped to live healthy, active lives???

They have a comprehensive plan, things are looking good ! I for one look forward to the double standard of care that will be provided to us at a minimal cost. Someone in Washington is doing a heckuva job and I appreciate it and look forward to it. No one could have anticipated the rise in health care cost, but they have a comprehensive plan. There are evil-doers out there that would do us harm by charging huge sums for health care, but we have a comprehensive plan to provide every american with over-priced health care.

Chiropractors allow the nervous system to function as best it can within an individual by correcting vertebral subluxations along the spine. That God-given power enables each of us to live to our full potential, not with sickness and disease.
