'I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.'
When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, we shall become as corrupt as Europe. The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not. It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world. I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them. My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government. No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government. The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical. |

Thomas Jefferson was for small government. His principles are still the basis for Reagan Republicans and Milton Freedman's basis of his book, "Capitalism and Freedom."

Everything is open to interpretation. The founding fathers could not have forseen what our country has become. Unfortunately money is the biggest player in America and who has the money ? The elite. But we have to have this balance between the elite and the poor working class. Who makes the rulings and the decisions for us to live by ? Again the elite. So it is unfortunate for anyone who has not obtained the status of elitist as we have to continue to play by their rules and live under the illusion that we are free.

So Money makes you a Free man.
I am by no means an elitist by your definition and I harbor no ill will toward those that have attained such a status, once again according to your definition.
But I am humbly grateful to live in the greatest nation in the world, as a free man.
Once again you don't disappoint with you liberal, socialist rhetoric, CZAR Hermes. Czar Hermes maybe you would prefer Venezuela, Cuba, Russia, or any of the the other Socialistic Nations in the world where you can be a FREE MAN, of course according to your definition.

Pacman you miss the point. A working class person can never, ever be president of this country (eg). And yes money does set you free because if you have it there are no rules. The same rules do not apply for the wealthy as they do for us. We are a capitalist nation. It's all about the money, plain and simple. When I was in Vietnam,as an example,I thought we were fighting for something, but what we were fighting for was so LBJ and his elitist friends could make money ! Even George Washington was wealthy and he used his position to make more money. Thats all I'm saying,I don't support socialism, communism or anything other than democracy. I only speak the truth.

Hermes, According to Edward Pessen, The Log Cabin Myth: The Social backgrounds of the Presidents about 18% of the Presidents elected in this country came from middle-class or lower-middle class families.

I'll research that Pacman thanks.
I am guessing but that 18% was probably prior to the 20th century. Now as for people working their way into the elite positions yes that is possible but it took generations. Another example I'll use is yourself,if you decide to run for president in the next election can you raise over $300,000 dollars ? Again guessing I'd say you can't. I can't,no one I know would be able to raise that kind of cash. So it takes the elite to play that game. As the old saying goes,"The rich have it and they are going to keep it". That includes high positions in government.
