On July 5, 2009, 5 years after the dedication of the Veterans Memorial at Woodside Cemetery, there was a rededication to mark the anniversary. The event, which lasted about an hour and a half, featured speakers David and Dawn Spencer who's son William D. Spencer, known as Billy, was killed in action fighting in Fuljas. The unveiling of a picture along with Billy's name on the wall was an emotional time for the family. As Mr. Spencer spoke he made a promise to all Vets past, present and future "as long as I have a breath, you will not be forgotten.”
Judge Anthony Valen gave a speech about the history of the memorial. In 2000, a committee of Veterans was formed to study the feasibility of honoring area Veterans who have served our country since this area was settled. Special emphasis was to be placed on those that lost their lives.
A site was selected at Woodside Cemetery and Arboretum adjacent to other military memorials. The design for the memorial came from Eric Fogarty, President of Dodds Monuments Inc. The design includes a 54 foot long 8 foot high curved wall of black granite on which are laser-etched military images from the collection of the nationally recognized artist Mort Kunstler.
Judge Valen also presented plaques to three families who's loved ones worked on the committee and have since have past away. The event was capped off with a three man parachute jump by a team called Fastrax (quite impressive)
