A month before West Chester Twp. Police Chief Col. John Bruce resigned. Bruce also resigned two days before Trustees were expected to name his replacement. He was a 29-year veteran of the local force. His resignation went into place on Monday, December 1st.
John Bruce’s replacement will be announced at the regular meeting on December 2nd. It will be made after the almost six-month-long search that only involved internal candidates. Even though Bruce’s contract does not expire until December 31st Captains Joel Herzog, David Kelly, and Lt. Erik Niehaus are being considered to replace Bruce.
Bruce will remain to get paid by the township until the end of the month. The township has had it in their initial plan that he would resign early. Bruce would step down once a new chief was chosen. Bruce said that the trustees will fulfill their part for the contract as well as he will do what he is supposed to do.
The candidates Herzog and Kelly have the support of Bruce so far because of their experience at the command level. There was a unanimous vote of “no confidence” in Bruce held on November 4th.
The new transition and new ideas are what the department is now looking forward to.
