Weekly Update to City Council September 1, 2008 |

Road Salt Bid It appears that salt is getting as expensive as gasoline. The bids received this year are two and three times the prices of last year, with limited availability of the tonnage needed. We will need to lock in the prices and tonnage in the near future.
Council Meeting Agenda reworked Since we will be holding the work session in the council chambers starting Tuesday, we reworked the agenda to incorporate the work session into the regular meeting. We may find this flows well, or we may need to make adjustments. Suggestions are welcome.
Bill Murphy’s New Position The MJ didn’t include in my quotes about Bill’s new position, that we will miss him, that he did a great job in Middletown and that his new position is a great opportunity. Bill will continue to live in Middletown and it will be great to have the connection to the Cincinnati Chamber. We all wish him the best of luck.
As for the transition, I will be contacting a couple of ED consultants to assist us in the interim. Transition is always a good time to see if any further organizational changes need to be made; I will be doing so.
Official home owner in Middletown I am now an official home owner in Middletown - Antrim Court! My house in Columbus is still for sale.
Downtown Middletown – The Next Step We had a great meeting last week with about 50 participants – reviewing the info from Paducah and talking about the next step for the community. Orville Martin offered to donate his building on N. Main St. to the city. We appreciate the kind gesture and will be evaluating the possibilities. Another outcome of the meeting was the idea of a staff person to spearhead the downtown efforts. This would not be funded by the city, but is very necessary if we are to have a concerted effort toward improving downtown.
Sudden Death Softball We met with the SDS reps to discuss field usage for this new league. We don’t have the recreation staff to schedule and oversee fields and we therefore rely on youth sports to do this on our behalf. Conflicts arise when new leagues come into the picture and the current leagues are not incentivized to negotiate with them. I believe it is in the city’s best interest to have room for some new leagues; we will attempt to work out a balance, but again, we don’t have the staff to do a lot of work at this level, unfortunately.
Chief Building Official retirement Congrats to Barbara Castells who retired on Friday with 13 years at the City as our CBO. We wish her the best of luck and health in her retirement.
