The Jug started out as a
hamburger stand in 1932 on South Main Street, serving hamburgers and
cheeseburgers, root beer, and hand-dipped ice cream. It moved to it's
current location at 3610 Central Avenue in 1939, in a quiet residential
neighborhood near the intersection of Central and Highview. It remains
in the original building today, a small oval stand with a screened in
area long the front containing a counter with barstools, and an awning
in front of the building covering 3 picnic tables. Everything remains
as it was then, including the famous Jug burger recipes, except for the
modern improvements in kitchen hardware.
The Jug has
an expanded menu today, including a pork chop sandwich, a grilled
chicken sandwich, beer-batter onion rings and fresh cut fries. The Jug
has coffee ground daily from gourmet beans, which comes as no surprise
as the owner has another Middletown-exclusive food service
establishment, Java
Johnny's. A true local favorite in Middletown, hopefully
they'll be around another 75 years.
